Nice video! Couple of points though - the main reason to use PRORES is that it's an editing codec i.e. it's very fast to work with in an editor because you are trading CPU power for storage. Scrubbing through the video and rendering will be dramatically faster. There is no point showing different bitrates and colour depths on a YouTube video, when it's on YouTube - it's 8 bit / 8Mb/s (HD). The only reason to keep a more data rate and bit depth around is to give you more dynamic range to play with in the edit. Your audio on that mic outside sounded great btw.

This is the second product review I've watched from you. I really like how authentic your reviews feel. They seem more focused on real world practicality as opposed to specs.

Sony A7III does not put out an external 10 bit, so it is always 8 bit video.

It depends on the gear you pair it with. For example, I just ordered a Ninja V+ for my new Canon R6II. For that camera, it allows 6k 60 Raw recording that's not available internally. Also from what I've heard, Canon codecs are hard to edit so ProRes might be easier. And lastly, RAW recording offers more color info and dynamic range in some cameras. If it indeed improves dynamic range on the R6II, then there are many benefits to a Ninja vs a monitor only (like SmallHD).

Thank you for a very honest assessment of the Ninja V. The thing I find hardest to live with is the menu system which appears to be anything but intuitive!

I got mine used primarily to shoot raw on my Nikon Z7 and record prores. It helped me visualize what raw can do while shooting. It is definitely more than I need, but I think it was a good purchase and one that I will look back on with approval.

I had the same back and forth but ended up getting a secondhand Shinobi. Before I decided, I thought the Ninja would be future proofing. In reality I bought a camera that can record Prores internally with no time limits so a Ninja for me would have been redundant. Irrationally, I still think they’re cool and kind of want one…

Will the Ninja's touch screen functions mimic that of the native touch screen for refocus the auto-tracking?

Workflow —. I simply hook up my SSD to my computer, and reference the video files on the SSD. Saves time, because I don’t import my videos for editing. Also, use the Ninja V to record game play on my computer. Much higher resolution that way.

Saving for the next model (after V+) or at least buying the V+ cheaper when next model is released.

I love your conclusion.
"Should you get it?"
"I don't know"

This is the question I have been asking myself! I am shopping around for my first monitor. I plan on doing mostly weddings and all I hear is the Ninja V is the way to go... But I have other gear to buy, own a FX3 and am not sure if it is. There's some monitors Ive been looking at by Portkeys that have my attention. You can actually tap to focus on them. Thanks again for adding this perspective. Not 100% sure which direction I'm gonna go, but this helps a lot.

I got mine with a 1TB SSD and a few other accessories for $300 used and always wanted one so I jumped on it after seeing that deal. I also wanted one too and its super cool. Prores RAW 6K footage from the S1H is pretty big but I always include storage in my billing to clients so I'm not so concerned about it.

You have so much to learn to both support and illustrate your opinions...like shooting a chip chart when you should be shooting a resolution chart to illistrate... well resolution....

I have a SmallHD (yeah i know....) Dealing with the huge batteries and how fast they drained was a legit pain and deal breaker which unfortunately is not an isolated issue with just SmallHD

The prores codec wins out when filming motion so your static test is not quite accurate. Do the same test with some flowing water and you will see the difference.

Well summarized! I feel similar about it. It's complicated. Its a very nice and desirable device with some great advantages, but it makes many things worse and more difficult.

I bought mine and returned it immediately because its soo contrasty and there is no option to tweak the colors, you would need to spend money to buy some sort of an adapter to connect it to your pc to be able to make changes. I kept my Desview monitor which was way cheaper and I can simply make changes. I was extremly disappointed on the Atomos which I think people buy just for the name.

You totally sold us on getting this monitor until the end... and now we're unsure about it
