Why Having Blue Eyes With Red Hair Is So Rare

Is blue eyes and red hair all in the genes or is there something more going on behind this rare combination?

I have red hair (gotten darker over time i much prefer it to the light i had in childhood) and green-grey (green with grey around the pupil and edge) eyes
They can appear green or grey depending on the light

Only downside is frying in sunlight

Both my dad and both sisters are red headed, blue-eyed and have Rh negative blood. So rare!

I’m included in the count of having red hair and blue eyes. As I am aging, my hair got darker, but I disliked being approached my men of all ages with inappropriate comments, questions and being followed. Sunglasses had to be worn on bright days, now I’ve added wearing hats as I am getting older, my eyes get so sensitive.

I can see red hair being the default color. A lot of ppl’s hair actually have a warm undertone & it won’t be noticeable until they go to lighten their hair. I’m obviously a natural brunette but I get my hair highlighted frequently (I go & stay blonde for 95% of the time). If my stylist only bleached/lifted the hair, my hair color is somewhere btwn a peach & a tomato & it looks hideous to me, but it is very common amongst Asian hair. Apparently, only a small number of ppl go yellowy-blonde when they just lift the hair color without using any toners.

My husband and I both have brown hair blue eyes! But our son was born with snowy white hair and blue eyes! His hair turned red when he was 4 days old!

Blue/grey eyes are more common in regions where red hair is also more common (like Western-Europe).
Maybe that's a strong link right there, but it's just my guess.

I'm red hair and have blue eyes- my hair is actually more orange in color but I've seen several red headed people with blue eyes so thought anyone with a different color was rare for a long time

My dad had red hair and brown eyes and that is rare. Both of my parents had red hair. I imagine our family looked like the Weasleys when we were out together. I was raised in a deeply German, Irish, northern European population in Illinois where I was related to many many of the population. There were a lot of redheads and blonds in our small gene pool.
