Check out our UTM Tracking Tutorial for Google Analytics. I will cover how to create tracking URLs that will allow you to track campaigns directly into your Google Analytics account. Creating UTM tracking URLs is an easy process, and it can be very useful for understanding your data for future campaigns. My goal is to show you exactly how to create UTM URLs for your marketing campaigns by using the Campaign URL Builder aka the Google Analytics URL Builder.

This tool allows you to easily add campaign parameters to URLs so you can track Custom Campaigns in Google Analytics.

UTM Tracking in Google Analytics will give you the opportunity to understand your marketing campaigns and advertising campaigns in addition to the different sources of traffic that are driving your conversions. You can find your top sources of traffic and learn for future campaigns, which will help you drive the best results within your budget.

What does UTM stand for?

UTM Stands for Urchin Tracking Module. It is the unique format that Google uses to track Unique URLs, which allows advertisers and website owners to track different traffic sources to their website and understand their impact.

You may be wondering how to set up UTM Tracking in Google Analytics and how to create UTM codes in Google Analytics. You actually use a tool called the campaign URL builder. I show you how to use the custom URL generator sometimes referred to as the Google Analytics UTM Tracking URL Builder. UTM building is easy, you just have to make sure that you keep your URLs organized for different traffic sources and mediums.

Some of the popular UTM Parameters are Campaign Name, Campaign Source, Campaign Medium, Campaign Term, and Campaign Content. You, of course, would set-up your destination URL or final URL as well in the process.

UTM Tracking Parameters and how they are used:

Campaign Source: utm_source

Campaign source will help you identify the source of your traffic. Some common examples include Google, Facebook, and Pinterest.

Campaign Medium: utm_medium

Campaign medium will help you determine the type of traffic you are getting. For example, did someone click on a paid search ad, is it organic traffic, is it referral traffic, is it social media traffic, or is it traffic from a newsletter?

Campaign Name: utm_campaign

Campaign name allows you to seperate your different campaigns to understand the top traffic sources for your marketing campaigns.

Campaign Term: utm_term

Campaign term can be used to determine the keyword that drove traffic to your website or the type of targeting you used for each click.

Campaign Content: utm_content

Campaign content is used for your different advertisements that you created to drive traffic back to your website.

Thanks for this useful video. Can you do a video on when to use Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager for tracking? Or the differences b/w the two, it would help a lot.

Really great and useful video Corey. It can get confusing inside the Analytics control panel. This is very clear and to the point!

Great video! Do you have another tutorial where it explains how you put the source, medium, and campaign name in Google Analytics as a new segment?

Thank you very much. So helpful.

In my case, I am running 2 ad groups under same campaign with different audience targeting, and same ads, (youtube video).

Now mainly I am measuring which ad group go well, is there any way to differentiate ad groups as same as there is section for ads?

Thanks

From all the videos I watched about UTM Tracking yours is definitely the most complete, best explained and exemplified. Thank you for this effort!

Just one question. Is creating UTM code for organic social media posts useful as, for instance, Facebook and Pinterest provide data on users' interactions with the posts?

Great job of explaining UTM Tracking. I have gotten Google Tech. to help me to setup a Ad Campaign. This is my first Google Ad Campaign, they told me I didn't need
to setup the UTM, is that true?

Great tutorial! Thank you. I have been supplied Google Analytics tracking code - but where do I use it when building 1) Google PPC 2) Linkedin ads and 3) Facebook/IG - is the tracking code URL just the URL destination for all the ads - so just goes where the URL would have gone? BIG THANKS

Wow thanks for the video, very informative! I am assuming we paste the generated campaign url into the url of each adcopy to track in analytics, which adcopy was responsible for conversions?

Where is the campaign builder URL placed if you own/have a website and you use a third party advertiser who sends out your ad in their newsletter? Do you provide them with the URL?

Thanks for doing these! Question about one of the tracking URLs you created for an organic FB post. Where / how would you attached this tracking url to an organic post. Most posts don't have links associated with them. Correct. Is this a thing, where you can track organic traffic to your site from an organic FB post?

Great informative video.
After creating the UTM URLs, we are using these at destination URL's of the campaign we built on like Google Ads, Pinterest Ads, InstaAds etc, correct? After then, does it automatically track in Google Analytics, (Aquiciston > Campaign > All Campaign), or do we need to set this up as well? Can you help!

Thank you for the videos! For some reason my campaign name/source/medium don't appear in GA. Is it because I am using link to a PDF instead of HTML or is it because I MUST have an account with Google Ad?
