It causes you to serve him better out of love than what you ever could out of legalism. The law is for those who are non believers. It is great at doing its job for unbelievers. It shows them that they are totally helpless and need a savior!

The purpose of the Law was to keep the Jewish bloodline clean enough for Jesus to be born. They were set apart from the Gentile world but definitely not Holy. Only God is Holy. Also, the Law revealed the Curse of Sin, Death & Hell which was established in Genesis after the sin I. The Garden of Eden. The entire system of The Law (10 or 613) led to Death & Hell bc nobody could keep them perfectly. Until Jesus fulfilled them all.
