The language of lying — Noah Zandan

We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

Okay, ‘I love you’ as an example for casual lies really hit home

As a professional liar, this is extremely accurate. I'm learning more about myself while watching this video, and I will use the information shown here to improve my lying game.

Pay close attention to person's trousers. If they are in fact on fire - then you got yourself a liar.

Excellent video. When we suspect a lie, I suggest we don't call it out directly, but instead call attention to the person's own role/self in the story, and ask for more details to see if they trip up. Assume good intent, but also trust your gut.

"Above all do not lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lies comes to a point that he will not distinguish the truth within him or around him, so he will lose all respect to himself and to the others, as a result he ceases to love"
Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Biggest lie during online school:

Message in the chat box: Hi, my mic does not work and my camera is broken.

I do this weird thing where I smile when I tell the truth (and the other person thinks I'm lying). Only because I find it funny how they think I'm lying. It's really annoying when they say "You're smiling, which means you're lying"

My favorite way to learn a lie is to ask someone else to ask the liar the same question, like for example I had a coworker who lied time to time, and she told me she was in the hospital so couldn't come in, but when someone else asked why she didn't come in, she told a completely different story to them because her comfort level was different with them

The most dangerous lie is when the liars don't realise they're lying to themselves.

We've all told this lie:

"Sorry miss, I did my homework, but left it at home"

this taught me to be better at knowing when others are lying, how to be better at lying and how to be better at making obvious lies for comedic purposes

I can say with confidence that this did not just teach me how to lie more effectively.

lying has become the norm everywhere (as a couple, in family, at work, with friends, etc.). Simply telling the truth as it is is an act of humility
