The Secret to Sanding Old Paint - Mechanical Sanding Tip

Have you ever wondered what the secret is to easily sand and remove old paint? Mike Kremsreiter, the Head of Production at Improovy shares how going slower is actually faster when sanding and trying to prep old paint surfaces. Running mechanical sanders at a higher speed isn't always the best choice when trying to remove old paint with a mechanical or orbital sander. Turning down the speed of the sander is better in some circumstances. It is also helpful if you are able to hook up your sander to an extractor. A great choice is @FestoolDeutschland and @festoolusa

Holy crap, 10 seconds in and that was already helpful. That's why my 9" sander was gumming up. Had no idea why, it's brand new. Okay so just slow/steady to keep low heat. My discs kept getting gunked within seconds on old paint but worked pefect only on new drywall mudd.

I appreciate that. I've just been sanding with an 80 grit paper and couldn't understand why it was gumming up - I had it on the highest DOH. I'm back at it tomorrow, and I should see the difference. Thank you.

Thanks I learned this the hard way with hand sanding over the past week! Soft and light movement is generally better than harder and stronger movements, agree tends to gum up the paint.
Also thinking of investing in an electric sander the old paintwork in my house is in need of work.
