What's REM Sleep - How Much Do You Need?

REM sleep may be the most fascinating and well-studied phase of sleep. Non-REM refers to the minimal eye movements of the first three stages of sleep, while #REM refers to the rapid eye movements characteristic of the fourth and final stage of sleep.

Note: The content on Sleepopolis is meant to be informative in nature, but it shouldn’t take the place of medical advice and supervision from a trained professional. If you feel you may be suffering from any sleep disorder or medical condition, please see your healthcare provider immediately.

Our understanding of sleep and dreams took a significant step forward with the discovery of rapid eye movement sleep in 1951. Researchers discovered that not only do the eyes move during #REMsleep, but the brain is nearly as active as it is while awake. Marked shifts occur in the brain and body during REM, heralding a stage entirely unlike the other three stages of sleep.

I found it fascinating that our muscles go "off-line" during REM sleep(Rematonia) so that we do not act out our dreams during the night. I had no idea about this.

I had no idea that the reason why we are technically paralyzed, or our bodies shut down for sleep and regeneration...is also so we dont act out dreams and hurt ourselves and others. SO interesting! Thank you for all the great knowledge!

REM is so important to your health, unfortunately I hardly reach REM when I'm so uncomfortable I'm waking up every 30 to 40 mins. Sleep has a huge impact on the body.

Well actually while dreaming I can actually change the scene like when some movie characters come I actually make one movie and I watch one movie I can feel that I am making that story and sometimes I am aware I am dreaming bt still I dream

I got a little freaked out when i learned that you are basically paralyzed during rem sleep. That this is a way for our bodies not to act out dreams and become dangerous to ourselves and others.I loved listening to the sections done by Dr. Krainin, i learned more about sleep than i ever thought i could and i loved the way he explained everything. This was a great video

Never heard of REM Atonia. Wow, this is much more serious than I thought. I knew sleeping is important but I did not know how much how I sleep matters too. Thank you for the educational video.

I started using a CBD product and now sell it cuz it's been wonderful. I always get to REM. No nightmares, no waking up to check my alarm. I have had no episodes of sleep paralysis. I love it

Rem sleep is something I RARELY reach. I have suffered from Insomnia most of my life. I rarely get a good night sleep or any sleep. I would love to have a deep sleep. I always feel really tired and soar when I wake up. BAD bed and BAD sleeping is a BAD combo. I have a hard time shutting down my thoughts.

I stopped using weed daily and my REM sleep is going extreme. My nights are filled with full vivid dreams which are usually negative and in some cases even horror or terror nights. If anyone has an idea how to reduce these dreams or make myself calmer in the night I'm all ears. I keep waking up because something bad is about to happen so I really get low to none rest in a night. Cheers

Wow, I had no idea there was so many ramifications with lack of REM sleep. Wish I had more REM sleep :-(

Before I started taking meds for my prostate, I would wake up to go to the bathroom often enough to mess up my REM sleep. Even dreaming of using the bathroom and waking up in the middle of dreaming. Affected my short term memory among other things.

I wonder if this REM rebound is something my nephew might suffer from occasionally? He pulled an all-nighter while his mother was in the hospital, then when he took a nap during the day, he jumped up like he'd been hit and attempted to sleepwalk. I had to wrestle him back into the chair so he wouldn't hurt himself and my sister said that he must have been really tired because he hadn't done that in years. At least now I know what might have caused that behavior.

So interesting!! I love learning stuff like this. I have a condition that causes me to hear loud BANGS 💥 (explosions) while I'm asleep that wakes me up. They sound SO REAL that at first I was convinced something bad had happened in the house. It happens about once or twice a month and started about 2 years ago. There are some studies done on this but no one knows why people get this condition. I didn't know about the disconnect between the brain and muscles during REM. Makes so much sense to keep people from hurting themselves..that was interesting to learn. Thanks for all the great information! I'm gonna read up some about this as it fascinates me.

Knowing that I'm dreaming, I can't stop thinking about scary dreams!

I have like uncontrollable lucid dreams and always have false awakening like 10 times before finally waking up!
