The rate of degeneration is highly variable. I have personally seen the full range of possibilities, including a 16-year-old with significant DDD, a 73-year-old with the spine of a young person, rapid progression within 6 months as well as up to 15 years with little to no progression. Much of the progression depends on genetics, so understanding how DDD has impacted your family may provide clues to how it may affect you.
