Hello everybody!

Did you know that the words “ITS" and "IT’S” are often used incorrectly?
There is often confusion between "ITS" and "IT'S". If you delve deeper into this issue, you will see that there is good reason for the confusion. However, if you just want to know what is right, the matter is very simple.

IT'S
"IT'S" is short for “IT IS” or “IT HAS”. This is a 100% rule!!! It cannot be used for anything else. If you cannot expand "IT'S" to "IT IS" or "IT HAS", then it is wrong!

"ITS"
“ITS” is like his and her, indicating the ownership.
"His" is used when the owner is male, e.g., these are his cars.
“Her” is used when the owner is female, e.g., these are her flowers.
"ITS" is used when the owner is neuter, e.g., these are its footprints.

BTW, "ITS’" is never correct! please don’t use it!

With this few information, you never have to worry about using these words incorrectly ever again!

Thanks for watching! Leave me comments if you still have questions!

The major reason for the confusion might be that the apostrophe (') is often used to denote possessive.

E.g.,
The cat's tail is black.
The teacher's English is not good.

And we tend to treat "It's tail is black" as something similar to above example, which of course is not right.

The way to avoid this mistake is always thinking "its" as the neutral version of "his".

Even though English isn't my native language, I rarely make such a common mistake yet a lot of people keep making the same mistake, it doesn't make sense whether they're native English speakers or not.

I'm sure I read somewhere, that it's is correct if it applies to a living thing? I.e. it's breath?

I honestly now understand the word it’s and its. I get it that it’s going to rain 🌧️ ☔️ stands for it is going to rain ☔️ 🌧️ . It’s been raining ☔️ 🌧️ means it has been raining ☔️ 🌧️ . No smoking 🚭 in buildings because it’s prohibited 🚫 means it is prohibited 🚫. The train 🚊 has its new 🆕 livery means the word it is isn’t in the spelling. Have its day doesn’t contain it is. I now get it. The words it’s and its are very complicated. 👍
