Difference between it and this

‘This’ and ‘It’ are both pronouns – they both refer to a noun.
So what’s their difference? Let’s find out!

‘It’ is a personal pronoun – that’s a word like ‘he’ or ‘she’ – except we use ‘it’ when we are referring to an object or animal. The object could be anywhere.

Examples:
I picked up the book and started to read it.
The wall was high, but they managed to climb over it.
The spaceship was fine until the aliens attacked it.

When we use ‘this’ we are being more specific – we are normally referring to one particular item right in front of us or is specific to what we’re discussing:

Examples:
Is this the gun that was used to shoot the victim?
This is the dress my mother wore on her wedding day.
This is the book I dropped on my way home yesterday.

Can you think of more examples?
Thanks for watching.

Can we put 'it' instead of 'the'? For example, (1) Is this the gun that was used to shoot the victim? (2) This is the dress... (3) This is the book... => can we just change "this" into "it". (1) Is it the gun that...? (2) It is the dress... (3)It is the book...
