It's vs. Its - What is the difference? - English Grammar Lesson

What is the difference between IT'S and ITS in English?

Yes, this is a common mistake even native English speakers have when writing. When do you put an apostrophe and do you leave it out?
One is a contraction and the other is a possessive adjective.

In this ESL video we look at this difference in more detail and have included examples of the uses of these homophones (words that sound the same though have a different meaning).
There is also an example that uses both IT'S and ITS in the same sentence.

Hi. İ'm reading a book called "A Cristmas Carol". Then "its" came out to me. I searched on YouTube because i mistyped "it's" and "its". Again, I came across your video. I understood very well. Thank you.

Well after decades of casual misuse/confusion I finally got that sorted. I had to watch the whole video to attempt the programming of my feeble brain. It's good to develop my brain's capacity, its written language use has improved.

I'd love to speak to the person that first decided this, and ask why they did not decide that "it's" as a contraction was a slang version of correct English being "it is" or "it has", which would have left the apostrophe-s ('s) suffix as sacredly always meaning "belonging to". That would have been much more intuitive . . but that's English I guess, and decisions on the language's future appear to have been "crowd-sourced" at the mercy of the collective.

Hi Professor
I am 35 years old.
I can not speak English at all and I just memorized a few words from your films and learned the possessive attributes and (do and does) Do you think that if I practice for 2 to 3 hours every day, it will take several years for me to learn and speak well?
I wrote these sentences on Google and got the translation. I hope he translated correctly.

I have a favorite white duck. Its name is Kuba. It's very playful. Sometimes it makes its beak and feathers dirty. In fact, It's been acting like a mischievous child. It likes me to put bread directly into its mouth. When I call its name, Kuba quacks. It has a partner named Jelly. Jelly is a little brown duck. It's cool because it utters in a low tone. It's amazing to see it fly. One day I wanted to feed them and called Kuba. Jelly flew and landed on the right spot, while Kuba had to swim across the lake.

I just don't like the inconsistency of how apostrophes are applied. "Matt's" could mean "Matt has" or "Matt is" but it also could be making it possessive i.e "Matt's car" but "its" is possessive without an apostrophe and only a contraction with one.

It would make more sense with they dropped the apostrophe for nouns when showing possession so at least it's consistent across the board.
