His Biggest Issue with Protestantism

Couldn’t have put it better. After having an argument with my (Protestant) uncle about how to know what Church has the correct teachings, I decided to investigate that same question.

A much more eloquent explanation of an issue I have with Protestantism: only someone fluent in Hebrew and Koine Greek can rely on Sola Scriptura. Everyone else is ultimately relying on scholars of some sort.

Just like Catholics. Except Catholics put very strict rules on whose scholarship we’ll consider.

The sentiment he expresses has been my confusion with Protestantism for awhile. It seems the more I listen to Protestant apologists trying to do "triage" the more it simply turns into, "We've picked a handful of things to be 'essential issues' and everything else we disagree on is a 'non-essential' issue that doesn't matter." But why do the other things not matter? And who got to make that decision? And if only like 4 or 5 teachings truly matter, then why did God bother mentioning everything else?

Baptism seems like an essential issue, worship seems like an essential issue, the structure of the church seems like an essential issue, etc. These don't seem like things that can just be hand waived away as "non-essential." Paul beseeched Christians to "speak the same thing, " that there be "no divisions among us, " and to "be united in the same mind and judgement." (1 Cor. 1:10) I don't see how Protestantism fulfills that.

Erasmus put it best when criticizing luther: "I believe that it is equally true that the authority of the Scriptures alone surpasses the united opinions of all men. But the controversy here does not concern the value of the Scriptures: both parties accept and venerate the same books. The conflict concerns the meaning of the Scriptures. Now I hear the objection: “What need is there for interpretation when the Scripture is entirely clear?” But if it is so clear, why have such eminent men groped so blindly and for so many centuries in such an important matter, as our adversaries claim?"

Perfect podcast!! Short, sweet and to the point. Former protestant since I took full communion in 1997. The catholic church fullfills scripture. I urge protestants to explore the catholic church beginning by reading in between the lines of holy scripture, the Word. If in doubt of devotion to Mary, in a nutshell 'honor thy father and mother'.

There's no Table in my Bible that has a column of "Essential" and "Nonessential". We are supposed to obey every Word that comes from God. It's a copout.

I went to Catholic school. The nuns taught “now, boys and girls, if you really WANT something, pray to Mary. You KNOW how a mother has her way with her children. At that moment, the entire class came to the conclusion the Catholic church is supreme. Funny though, I’ve been praying to be a multi-millionaire with a beautiful wife and lots of children, but nothing has happened. I’m close to retirement now and still alone, but I believe in what God did for Abraham!
