The Green Children of Woolpit

The 12th century tale of the Green Children of Woolpit, in Suffolk, is a bizarre medieval folk story which has been remembered for generations. It isn’t often we hear of children appearing at the edge of a field, with green-tinged skin and no knowledge of any locally-known language. Even today, historians debate as to whether there was any truth to the story, some going so far as to claim it describes an extra-terrestrial encounter.

I've been fascinated by the story of the green children since I first heard it during my teen years. The fact that the children recognized only the beans as food did indicate that they may have suffered from nutritional deprivation. The fact that nobody in Wool Pit knew where St. Martin's Land was says that these kids were from way beyond a day's ride on a good horse!
