Coding Books I would AVOID - You Don't know JS || #TechRally

In this video, I discuss a book series I would not recommend when starting to learn how to code. Specifically in the Javascript community, the You Don't Know JS series is highly recognized by a lot of developers.

Although a great book for supplementing your learning, in my opinion, the barrier to entry is a bit high for new developers. Developers should focus on the basics and build small and large applications to add to their portfolio.

You Don't Know JS books are a great resource as you find yourself using Javascript day to day. The books are great for deep diving and understanding at an intimate level the nuisance and quirks of the language.

I am a Full Stack JS Developer and I learned how to code with the books listed below.
However I know that only after I finishing the series of 'You Don't Know JavaScript by Kyle Simpson' I feel confident to call myself a JavaScript developer.

'HTML & CSS' by Jon Duckett
'JavaScript & jQuery' by Jon Duckett
'Up & Going' - You don't know js by Kyle Simpson
'Scope & Closures' - You don't know js by Kyle Simpson
'this & Object Prototypes' - You don't know js by Kyle Simpson

Opinion on the video:
- Agree because that's his personal opinion and maybe for him it worked best that way and on that particular order.
- disagree because I will recoment people to read something that will really solve a problem for them. If you are having lot of syntax errors for example read on that particular topic.

Good luck guys and read on the things that you will actually use today.

my view is everyone is different... I personally found books great and couldn't learn the "doing" way.. I just had to learn JS academically... I needed the structure.. I found you dont know JS brilliant and before I felt I was at a dead end with online practical JS courses. Typically, the coach would start with some simple code... but before long.. they'd be just boshing out long lines and I just felt the foundations weren't concrete. Solid foot holds... solid foundation... proper understanding of the rules of code.. for me these things were vital before just writing out code on a visual practical course... but if I dont know how something works... I won't just be able to learn and implement it... I'll have questions that will stifle learning..

I think these books are great after you learn the fundamentals. It is definitely better to read these before Eloquent JS.

Haha, the nitty gritty details are exactly why I wanted those books.

I have read all series of You Don't Know JS second edition. That is the series that you must read at some point if you work with JS on a daily basis. Not even once, these kind of books are supposed to be read multiple times. And "why move on if u don't understand a topic", have this mindset when reading. It will not only help you understand JS, but also help you get a sense of how other programming languages work.
And much much more benefits that you wouldn't be able to relate if you haven't read the whole series.
But ofc, it's better if you are already into programming world for like six months or something.

Hey bro which books you recommend to understand the core concepts of javascript like hoisting, es6 concepts, promises, asyn await and so on... I want to know javascript in deep. Wat u recommend?

The main purpose of JavaScript was to enable the user to be more interactive with the Web or with the Browser. It is very important to know how a thing works. This allows the user or the "Coder" to get to know where the problem is. I do not think that after knowing some basic JavaScript and knowing how to write the function without knowing the definition of the function will allow any coder or developer to get a good job.

I was just looking for Kyle Simpson interviews and this video came up so I thought let's have a look. These books are for people who are really really nerdy and wants to learn things underhood.

For me after all these years been. a concomitant reader of this series it seems to me the author wants to attack the language by some reason, trying to convince you how the language needs to be.
Why doesn't the author write a language I don't know.
Myself began using the language without almost any knowledge of the language and the features that I should have learned before was his asynchronous nature and the "this" reserved word difference with Java.

Yeah, it's truly better to have some loose understanding and look stuff up while building things instead of reading a book. Javascript is incredible, because it has so much BS you'll often be confused why your code doesn't work and have to deep dive to figure out why. The concepts are quite abstract, so it's best to make them concrete in your own mind instead of relying on text and diagrams. Maybe that's just the best way to learn everything 🤔
