If I couldn't use my favorite app for 4 days I'd probably be better off

"Imagine not being able to use your app for 4 days"

... I think you need to go outside... Without the phone.

That's 3 days a year... Not that bad, think it's about 6 hours a month. Or a few minutes a day.

Thank goodness for this video, because basic multiplication is so hard for those of us software engineers.

4 days out of the year is honestly not bad at all. You name off these huge companies with region scaling and failover, but all that is moot to a person starting out learning this information.

I'm fine with that on pretty much most apps that are connected to the internet. Only financial apps I don't like the idea of it going down longer than a day.

99% uptime - out of 100 days, the system will be up for 99 days. So in effect, the downtime will be 1 day. So in 365 days, the downtime will be 3.65 days.

State Bank of India server up only for 9% per day😂

Internet providers take advantage of people's assumption that 99% uptime is excellent by stating that their service is "99% reliable*"

To be fair some sites have maintenance times at 12AM for an hour or so. It'd be the same thing. An hour a day of scheduled downtime wouldn't be all that awful, especially if the people know about it... But this is assuming it's not an important website/app.

Sounds like the kind of service that I had with CenturyLink, when it was working, it was great, but when it was down, it was usually a day each time. Local dispensary had someone cut their phone lines when trying to repair a water line, and they were down for six days, so no internet or phones for that long.

Now imagine being asleep for almost 30 years (it's 8 hours a day). Wow, pretty bad.

I love this, thank you for explaining it! Although I do wish you broke it up a bit more in a longer video as well :) what's the formula?
