This is so accurate. I’ve been saying this to all my friends. If you don’t have a project you’re working on, one that you care about, then you’re not fighting through the real learning!

30+ year programmer here, I've shipped over a thousand commercial apps. And this is what I tell people all the time. This is 100% correct.

I'm 60 years old and I've been coding since my 20s. This, what this video says, is true.
Btw, this also applies if you're learning spoken languages. Do it. Make mistakes. Mistakes are your friends. You'll get there. But you'll never get to the end. And that's good.

Once you understand the very basics of programming, having a project in mind and just googling your way into completing it is the best way to start learning. Programming never really clicked in my mind until I actually tried to build something. Once you get better and you feel confident enough in your ability to build stuff then you should start learning more about principles, best practices, etc. Some of it will come naturally and some of it you'll have to study.

A year ago, I was completely lost with no real experience, I was filled with nothing but those tutorials you mentioned and I reached a point where I felt coding wasn't for me, Regardless of the stress and depression I was in, I decided to go all out and see where my limits actually end. I picked up a backend project while having zero experience in how backend actually works and I started learning about random topics related to my project, figuring out how to implement them and immediately coding. I kept this approach and finally without me even realizing it, I gained real experience and completed a whole project, But most importantly, I learned how to really believe in myself.

My first programming teacher said this to my class: The best way to learn coding is to code, code and code some more! Don't be afraid of making mistakes, this will happen for us all. Learn by doing.

This concept I would say work for people who have studied the concepts first. Because some of them stick to tutorials and stay in them, but you can't code something you don't understand how it works. you have to be able to understand the logic behind these concepts, and how to think like it.

Knew this already, fought it still, and even still needed this message. Thank you!

my favorite coding channels next to fireship. no marketing bullshit trying to sell people on some dumb concepts they made up in order to sell a course, just great content man.

Not related to coding but when I tried to study art I tried to learn things as fast as possible yet it only give me nothing but when I tried to focus on one thing and actually learn how to make good art I actually improved. So yeah. I have learned a lot on how to learn something by not studying it. But by actually doing it. Which is the same for coding. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I've been learning programming for 8 years now. Your points are fairly valid for newbies, but as you start to learn more by experience, you'll start to know you need to study about design principles, so your project won't get messy over time.
This is the problem I faced as a guy who'd been learning programing for 8 years, only by building and experiencing. Don't get me wrong, this is a very good method. But reading books on top of that really helps.

Damn I needed to hear this. As someone who's been faced with a layoff from earlier this year and still hunting for work, and putting in time to learn more skills with code, thank you my dude.

In a lot of ways this is really reassuring to hear. It's always stress abt being qualified, having the best technical skills—but I never got around to completing a project under my name. A lot of ppl seem to agree in the comments ab favoring experience and the rest all comes together. Thank you for the advice 🙏🙏
