Is the Midea U-Shaped Window AC Worth It?

I love the idea of the Midea U-shaped unit.
Someone clearly said, "what if we built a mini-split in the form factor of a window unit?" and in retrospect the idea is so obvious it's insane.
Hopefully someday I'll be able to afford one!

I installed my U-Shaped Midea 12, 000 BTU unit in my living room last week. It is FANTASTIC! It is so good that I haven't had to turn on the window unit in my kitchen (conventional window a/c) at all! The Midea cools both very well. So I'm saving even more $$$! Oh, and the Midea is so quiet that if I have the TV on, I can't really tell it's running unless I look at it and the air outlet cover is moving up and down!

is why dual tube portables are a must if you care about efficiency, in cases where these U types don't fit or other casement

I would have preferred if the comparison was done with the same conditions. I understand it cant be the same night, but to have the central AC on for one but not the other will skew the results - making the LG look better. Thus the graph showing the temp diffs doesnt really connect as well as it should - due to the LG looking better.
Ofc, you do mention that the central AC was on - but this means we have to "imagine" that the LG would have been even worse, rather than seeing it on the graph.

I just got mine and I love it but when open window thing is strange the screen will not go down all the way going to need an expandable window screen if I chose to open the window I don't need to but its an option. If they just made the unit a little wider from front to back, plenty of bracket behind it.

Yes, it's worth it. I just installed mine today, and it's fantastic.

It is a nice-looking unit
But that is all. I purchased two 12000-BTU units, and both worked for two years. On the third season, both blew hot air, and the code that came up indicated a loss of refrigerant. I contacted midea customer service, and they didn't even try to find a solution to help me. The only answer I got was that the unit warranty is only for one year. True, but when I checked the owner's manual, I did see that there three year warranty on the compressor and five years warranty on the seals. I contacted them again, and they told me that I would have to hire a qualified technician and pay for before midea could look into it. I don't think it was my responsibility to spend more money and keep on getting no where after I spent $1000.00 to purchase the units that failed after two years of use. Therefore, I disposed both in the garbage.

I'm hoping that if I get one, it'll actually fit in my window, it's less than 12" tall so literally NO AIR CONDITIONER fits except standing one (which i hate) so hopefully the midea u shaped one works!

It’s best to get a dual hose a/c those work amazing I have a whynter a/c and in the kitchen I have a midea 12000btu u shaped a/c and both are great also both inverter a/c so they save tons of power…. What’s even better is I’m running all my units on solar power

yeah, i'm worried about our curtains that are floor length. i wonder if they can still tuck behind the unit so that it'll black out the room bc i work nights a lot and need to sleep during the daytime in a nice cooled

I like the sound of an AC unit. Especially when I am sleeping.

Thanks for the video. What is the depth of the slot? - how thick can the window be?

Can you run the Midea all night when outside temperature is 60°F ? How about if outdoor temp is 55°F? I definitely want to run it at night set to 68 or 72. These cool and dehumidify great. If fan only is running, you don't get to dehumidify. I need a constant dehumidifier so, I really want to run that feature all night. I don't know much about AC units. Im taking guesses here. Can't they freeze if run in too cool outdoor conditions? Maybe this has a defrost feature I don't know about? Who here knows about what Im talking about?

Hi,
Very grateful for you. Do you know if I can use this with a horizontal sliding windows?

12k BTU for less than 200sq ft, huh? That is 2x - 3x the size needed for that room. This will result in the unit cycling off before removing all the moisture in the air. Please let us know when your walls start to sweat.

I bought a Midea U 8K BTU. Being able to open a window is just a gimmick imo (because I really love bugs the instant I open a window with no screen). The installation is a laugh because the "center" (marked by the "factory" is not actually center. Contact me for more info. If you follow the instructions you will not get a centered AC unit in the window space. The included weather foam is laughable and insufficient. Even the gimmick-y rotating side swiping insulation mechanisms are a laugh but will be ok for an amateur at heart. Once you remove all the stuff you do NOT need from the unit - it's actually pretty darn great. The U design is very good and this is a VERY quiet unit imo. Dump every aspect of the insulation and get your own weather seal (thick!) . You will not be disappointed. Strong on basic unit design with support. Weak on insulation and weird gadgetry and installation instructions.
