Surface Laptop 5 hands-on: A bare minimum update

Today Microsoft announced its refreshed Surface Laptop 5, which just like before will be available in 13.5 and 15-inch models. The new notebooks will also feature 3:2 touchscreens with a very familiar brushed aluminum design. Actually, almost everything about the Surface Laptop 5 is the same as before, aside from the addition of new 12th-gen Intel CPUs and one Thunderbolt 4 port.

They should have reduced the bezel and fit a 14" inches screen in the small one and a 16"inches for the bigger one.

I though this time would be a big update. And Microsoft can't be any prouder to show their least effort yet. I am very disappointed.

They could have at least slimmed down the bezels
The laptops literally haven't changed at all since the very first one

Wow, they waited about 18 months since the release of Surface Laptop 4 to do almost nothing for Laptop 5.

I really was hoping for a big update with this laptop. I was hoping for thinner bezels like the surface pro 8 and 9 because those look so good. Too bad the surface pro line isnt the best for non table/desk use

What a disappointment!Late release + outdated design + second class performance + highend price. This product line is gonna die.

I have wanted a black Surface Laptop for ages (and now sage maybe), but will never buy as long as those bezels continue to exist.

I'm a Surface fan but I'm seriously DISGUSTED by what Microsoft has done to the product lineup. ZERO innovation LOL disgusting. Same design for every single release LOL

Why have an event for minor upgrades?🤦🏿‍♂️

Big let down guys . Big let down. So they want us to wait for one year more so that they can give us something good.

would have loved if MS upgraded their machines in a way to come closer to the Macbook Pro lineup (performance and formfactor). They are always 2 yeasrs behind. Apple b rings all the ports back and MS keeps them removed. Form over function there. They look definetely magnificent but lack in features and performance.

I am fine with the bump in the processor and Thunderbolt for the 13" models. I find the Surface Laptop almost on par with the MBA and the design was already great. The sum of the parts on the SL4 (keyboard, screen, sound, and webcam) resulted in an excellent experience. The SL5 will be more of the same and more performant. People will compare this to the Dell XPS 13 (which I have) and 13+ (which I don't) but I have always been excited (and then disappointed) with those models. Maybe it's just me...

seriously, if they can just make the bezel thinner and 120hz screen..it could had been much better..is it so much to ask microsoft??

Gonna stick longer to my Thinkpad and wait for the Surface Laptop 6. If not, the new Acer Edge 16 really looks interesting for a premium and sleek laptop.

Was hoping for 120hz display but I guess that was too much.

Why is no one talking about how important TB4 was to the surface. It’s now a laptop with a very beefy CPU & TB4 which means you could have an eGPU dock at home & with a single cable have desktop class performance.

I was waiting for this but I'm so glad I jumped the gun and got the Asus ZenBook S13 OLED before this was announced

At least they didn't remove the headphone jack like they did on the Surface Pro 9.

Okay, but these minor updates convinced me to pickup a Surface Laptop 4 15" while it's being cleared out on sale :)
