What do you guys think of the Surface Laptop 5?

My Surface Book 2 (15” i7) was literally dieing and I’d been holding out for this…no arguments that it’s a subtle yet lovely device to use, and way lighter than the SB I had before.

It was a shame to not get the 120hz display, and 1080p webcam, though overall it’s a nice upgrade for me. It’s literally a daily driver for me, and it’s nice to know it’s more repairable than the SB was.

I had three surface products. Original surface, a surface laptop 2, and a 6 gen surface. they were beautiful no doubt, but they all suffered for poor battery life. I bought a Dell xps 13 9305 last year and it has maybe 4 hr with 40 percent display on quiet mode. eliminated all I could from starting up. Decided to get a MacBook Air M2 and the battery is great! I'm not a power user just emails, web and office stuff. X64 is is slowly dying. Time for windows chip makers and Microsoft to bite the bullet and rewrite their code.

surface 5: Consumer base Intel Core i5-1235U (up to 4.4GHz, 10 cores, 12 threads)

Before I switched to the Apple ecosystem I was a fan of Surface laptops, they're premium products. My favorite was the original Surface Book with its unusual hinge. I had that thing for years, until the battery in the screen would no longer take a charge.

remember when Apple didn't change a thing on their laptop design for 5yrs and no one complain?

Picked up a Surface Laptop 4 15" with the i7/16gb/256gb SSD for $250 at my local marketplace. I'm very impressed with it. I had no idea that these gen surface laptops had upgradeable SSDs. It makes it a much more attractive option to get a lower end model with 16gb of RAM minimum and just upgrade the SSD.

a similar report was done from engadget yesterday about the surface pro 9 tablet, that the refresh isn’t necessarily as fast as last year’s model.

i suppose the main advantage with these newer refreshes is the newer battery, but that just comes from buying new in general and nothing specific about these current models.
the advantage of last year’s model now is that the useful life of the product should have an extra year tacked onto it considering it’s just as fast as the refreshed model. people would be saving cost of dollar per useful time of ownership.

Seriously, just get a Lenovo (Yoga) Slim 7 with AMD. It's better in nearly every way. Thinner bezels, similar screen resolution and touch screen support but with a 165 hz refresh rate, better port selection, and best of all, better battery life. IMO, the Surface Laptop 5 is DOA.

😂 Nothing like Acer sponsoring a review of a Microsoft Surface.

Almost 20% of this video was a Best Buy commercial.

This laptop is just not reasonable for purchase in 2022. The (13-inch) laptop is practically the same as in 2017, except for the new processor.

There is a whole lot of outdated things in this laptop.
The bezels are horribly thick by today's standards, and they were not that thin back in 2017 anyway. Microsoft can definitely fit a 0.5 inch larger screen. Also, there is a large bunch of high-res (2880-by-1800 or 2560-by-1600 displays, even though these are 16:10 not 3:2), high refresh (at least 90 Hz), HDR OLED displays in productivity laptops this year. The Surface's screen is not bad per se, but not class-leading anymore.
The 720p webcam sucks, when HP can fit a 5 MP, QHD, "centre stage (HP is not calling it that way)" webcam in a smaller top bezel and a similarly thin laptop lid.
The speakers are not great anymore, when quad speakers become common in premium laptops since the last year.

Haptic trackpads are picking up this year. Microsoft also has it in the Surface Laptop Studio, but it's lazy to implement it in the regular laptop.
The list goes on.

The thing is, I do like Surface. I personally own two Surface tablets. There is something great about Surface. But at the end of the day, Microsoft is recycling too much for the Laptop 5. It had gone too far.

Can you please make a full review on Lenovo slim 7 pro x AMD version?
And please for general users, review the R7, 16 gigs ram variant.
Not everyone (including me) are looking forward to buy the R9 and 32 gigs ram version.

Ya, I love MS products for their quality, but Surface Laptops have been quite pricey for what you get. I know my M1 Pro is pricier still but for what it offers, I simply couldn't be happier. Still the best all around laptop out there. It's a beast of a machine that's quiet and long-lasting. Best purchase tech-wise I have ever made, even if on the expensive side. If MS would make their Surface Laptops comparable and at a reasonable price, I'd certainly consider going back to Windows.

Great video. I agree there is something awesome about that build quality. I am a surface pro user now and was going to upgrade to a surface laptop 5 - 15". I recently found the lenovo slim pro 9i - 14" and was very impressed. Also looked at the xps 15 but now I am a little confused. I do typical office work but also do graphic design and photo editing. Do you have a preference over these 3 laptops that you would suggest, or any others. (btw I typically dock my laptop in the office, so I use a keyboard, mouse and monitor. I still do work from home and in that case I use just the laptop) Thanks in advance.

Which model were you seeing 14 hr battery life, Intel or AMD?

It is pretty obvious that they aren't even trying. I do wonder with Project Volterra coming out this year and them making a big push in the ARM area, if they aren't just coasting right now until the software is there to put an ARM chip in one of these things.

It's insane how easy it should be to make the perfect laptop and literally no company is able to do it, Apple is the closest to it but being locked into macOS is major drawback. That's why I'm forced to have at least 2 devices, 1x MacBook and 1x device for Windows and Linux.
