The current status is that:
1) Taiwan's nation name is Republic of China,
2) The constitution of ROC and PRC all defined their territory includes Tai Wan and provinces of China mainland.
So based on the constitution's definition, China mainland and Taiwan are always in the same country.
If taiwan wants to change the status, the government of PRC will never let it happen.

The major fighter planes in Taiwan is, in fact, the F-16s (140), Mirage 2000 (54), and IDF (home built, 129). F5 is mainly for training purposes. I believe the F-16s are not very outdated.
