China launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan on Thursday in retaliation to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island. For more analysis on the heightened tensions, FRANCE 24 is joined by Taiwan-based expert Dr. Jean-Yves Heurtebise, Associate Researcher at the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China and Associate Professor at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. "China said it is responding to a provocation by Nancy Pelosi," explains Dr. Heurtebise, "but I think we should be reminded that the provocation is coming from China." He asserts that Nancy Pelosi's visit was actually "a way to respond to constant pressure from Chinese authorities towards Taiwan."
