No couch co op makes this a no for me. That is literally the only thing I wanted in this game.

No couch co op especially on switch is such a deal breaker. They really dropped the ball

Hey man, just a quick note. You say in the review that it was "designed for a gamecube controller" (which is why it has very simplistic button mapping). The gamecube controllers had basically as many buttons as modern controllers, the reason the buttons are so simple is it was actually designed for GBA controls.

This game, along with Zelda: Four Swords Adventure. Was basically built around the new concept of plugging a gameboy advance into your gamecube and using it as a controller. This was Nintendo's first foray into controllers with screens which was perfected in the Wii U. In the original game, players could check their menu, change items, check maps etc on their gameboy without interrupting the flow of the game. A really cool idea in theory, but not that compelling in this game IMO (however Four Swords executed it absolutely incredibly well)

Man, how does this not have couch co-op? Such a missed opportunity.

The whole purpose of the game is just gone, you’re no longer the same caravan from the same village, you can’t go to towns or watch crossroads together, that was my favourite part

I was only ever able to play this game single player, because none of my friends had a Gameboy advance + adapters.
So personally for me, I'm just re-experiencing the game I loved, in the exact same fashion that I'd done so before.
This game is perfectly fine single player. It was one of my top 5 Gamecube games, despite never playing with another person.
So yeah, while there are some things you can gripe about, for me personally, this remaster was worth every penny.

So two things I want to say:
- Playing with a friend is not AS expensive as you make it look if you play on Switch or Smartphone. Plus, the second player isn't forced to buy the game, he can do the all adventure with his friend on the demo version. Even if I too miss the couch coop, I think it's not as bad as you make it look like.
- The story only progressing for one player is actually a very good thing, since you can then gear up your additional characters without making your dungeons more difficult.

Only the person hosting a multiplayer session makes progress?

So what's the point of having multiple copies then? If only one of them is actually* being played?!

Players not sharing a town, not being on the same caravan, not being able to explore cities or witness world events together.... this game is a mess

No local multiplayer? *Not even on Switch?!*

That's a deal-breaker right there.

What’s with FF Crystal Chronicles requiring separate hardware to play with friends? I guess that’s true to the original 🤷‍♂️

The original actually relied on the gameboy advance/sp with a cable connected for multiplayer, to act as a control and gave you access to your inventory and it was actually pretty cool how that worked. The game Itself was less so much for use with a gamecube control unless you were playing solo, but I feel this heavily leant towards mp. Great review though pal

Can you name a single remaster that missed the point of the original more than this?

Pretty sure it wasn't designed with a GC controller in mind but with a GBA as a controller, thats why its so clunky and they should have fixed that with the remaster. Also you describing the trouble you had to get through to get a couch co-op experience mirrors exactly the trouible to get four GBAs with GC connector cabels together. But if you compare it in that sense with the original GC version then they made it even harder and way more expensive to play with your friends than with the original. Not to mention you were able to play the full campaign with your friends and even explore the towns with them and so on. So in other words the remaster is an infirior version to the original. I'm honestly baffled, i had no idea when i bought this game that its gonna be this way. Mostly because one would think when re-releasing this game, improving the MP experience and make it more easy to play with your friends and improving the controlls would be the most priority but they did non of that. Online play with randoms is fun too and crossplay is awesome but that should have been an addition and not a replacement.

The games controls are still designed for a GBA. It blows my mind that they didnt change that, but did remove couch coop...

How do you cut the couch coop from the COOP FINAL FANTASY?! 🤯

Not having coop built in and requiring networking is the worst design choice possible Square Enix could have chosen, and boy does Square Enix love making terrible and awful design choices these past several years.

6.5 minutes in and I find a lie. In multiplayer of the original ALL players had to use a GBA.

What a shame. I have this for the Gamecube but haven't played it because I don't have friends. This was a chance for the game to open up for everyone and they blew it.
