One thing I learned living in Brazil is: always make eye contact with who you think is gonna rob you. Stealth and surprise are key elements for a thief/robber/burglar to act and succeed. It happened with me more than once, I was surely gonna be robbed, then I looked at them and walked towards them and they just went away. In one of these situations they actually robbed the person right in front of me. Always make sure the robber knows you are aware of them. A thief is essentially a coward.

Our home was robbed on a bad weather day (heavy rain). The cops told us they felt safer breaking-in while the rain noise helped them from being easily heard or from neighbors hearing. They'd cased our place & waited for bad weather & us being gone to work.

Few people have home phones anymore, so nearly all alarm systems communicate by cellphone or Internet. Internet is very, very fast and often alerts the user at the same time as the monitoring station.
