How do you break out of art blocks and create art that you love?

Problem is, I don't use references alot cause when ever I search for references I always see people that are better than me, it makes me feel like crap, especially when they are my age or younger, but I agree with what you said!

Right now I feel like a failure. I do digital art mostly. I feel like none of my work is unique or different. Like it’s all too similar to my other work, but progressively worse. I know I’ve got some skill, which makes it more frustrating that I can’t do it.

Its hard to not link my art skills to my self worth bc its literally all I have and all I can do lmao. I'm just a no one with no abilities for anything if I don't make art. It's heavily linked to my job, its all I do. I cant to something else, I tried.

When I look at my friends' social media accounts which are filled with selfies/family photos, sometimes traveling photos, and then I look at mine full of arts/skills that I can do, I feel so proud of myself.
I'm not saying that I'm better than my friends in general, but more like I'm better than them in these particular skills.

But then I look at other artists' accounts... Well, I feel like I'm nothing compared to them. I feel like I shouldn't be here, trying to enter their world.

At 0:06 I don't have periods when I hate my art. I always do. I have this urge to just burn my entire sketchbook and scatter its ashes in the ocean

it can be a lonely road as a struggling artist. art is such a personal thing that it’s hard to get friends and family to understand the disappointment you have in your work. i can’t communicate well with others because it’s always “you have such a great talent!” and “i wish i was a good as you.” when you don’t feel like you measure up to your art, it can be pretty intimidating to hear those words because you think “my art isn’t perfect, but they think it is, so now i have to make it perfect.” it’s a deep hole to fall into. anyways, other artists might not feel the same, but i go through this often.

What has really gotten up my confidence is actually copying artworks I really like. It’s not mine, then, but I pick up LOADS of solutions to issues I myself have had. There is no shame in copying over and over. Just don’t show it or sell it as YOURS. But absolutely do share it as «I’m doing a study :)»

I keep coming back this video, whenever I feel down on myself. For some reason I hate myself and can't any joy in making art outside of others approval. So watching this helps keeping myself in tact.

Thank you

i really do equate the quality of my art with my self worth. if i think a painting is going well then everything else in my life is going well but as soon as i get to a finished point & get bummed out i spiral & everything is affected. sucks. but hearing you say that made me feel better cause i didn't really realize that's what was happening until you said it. feel like this video opened my eyes. when i look at my work more objectively & pretend it's not mine for a minute i don't actually think it's bad at all.

The starting chapter of Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland tackles on equating art with self-worth and your explanation here is awesome. They take a more broad view showing that this is only a modern problem in artmaking, but with your explanation I felt that I could relate to it much better. Ty Kelsey!

This is a lovely video, thank you so much. I’ve been struggling so much with my confidence, I really want to (some day) be a full time artist taking commissions and stuff. It was really nice to hear you say that my self worth does not equate to my artistic performance. Have a lovely day <3

I totally agree with everything you said! What I do with references is taking pictures, like my hand for example. But i take a picture from it from every side so i can understand and learn at the same time. (I learn anatomy) i love your art!

Thank you for this! I really hated my art today and it made me feel so horrible but this helped :)

Thank you for the great advice. Hating one's art is a very commonplace problem unfortunately. Quite a few of my pieces go to the bin straight away unless I can still use the other side for testing or experimenting.

How can I help my fiancée with this? I don’t want to send her this outright but I want her to see the beauty in what she makes. Argh!! Thank you for making this video btw

I am a beginning digital artist, and my problem is that I can't seem to get myself to draw in a consistent style. Not just mildly inconsistent, but literally every art piece that I make almost always is in a different style than the others, and even if I make one that I actually like, its almost impossible to replicate again. And when I do make art that I enjoy creating, I end up looking down on it because it looks either "too simplistic" or, "doesn't look good", most of the time both. I think that looking at other people's art to learn from it is great, but it can also make me feel like crap from seeing people that can make so much better art than me. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to draw in a consistent style?

I’ve been going through this since the “support young artists?” Trend happened. Why does a 10 year old draw so much better then me?
