I'm 25 and I realized how terrible this is, and decided to do something. My dad died from dementia at age 67 after stressing himself our for years in a job he hated. So I gave up my pretty good office job to work as a commission artist! It'll never pay wonderfully, but I get 8h of sleep, I love my clients, I love what I do and I travel at least once a month. Money just doesn't buy enough time.

As a retired person, I am happy to see people finally rejecting the 40+hr work week. I didn't hate my job, I hated having to clock in by 8 AM, and staying until the boss left after 6PM, when most of my work was done by 10AM. Worked at least 12 hours every weekend as well. My weekends weren't fun or restful. 19 years of school (7 years college), 40 years of work. Life is just beginnng at 65. Right when my body is falling apart from 65 years of stress. My advice to young people: work a little as possible, live as frugally as possible, try to find a way to make money without the shackles of a job.

bold of you to assume I have a normal sleeping pattern

You took out sleeping as if it's something I don't enjoy or look forward to. Put those 20 years back.

Edit: to all the people saying what I actually enjoy is the feeling after sleep, you’re wrong. Why on earth would I enjoy waking up in the mornings? I enjoy the sleep itself and the moments leading up to it.

I am 22. This video made me cry. I’ve thought these things but never heard them out loud. I now want to quit my job in an insulation plant and go snowboard 24/7. Why did we create a society that depends so heavily on money😭

Coming back to this video 4 years later just to say this video is one of the reasons I turned my life around. I went to college and began a career I love and find tons of enjoyment working in, with good pay and more time off than I could ever hope for working a typical Monday-Friday job.

To everyone out there finding themselves in a dead end job and only living for the weekend, it is never too late. If you push yourself and work hard to become better, your life WILL get better.

I actually cried while watching this video, to be honest I actually was laid off from my job, and although I didn’t like it, it gave me a sense of purpose it allowed me to have a little bit of freedom.

I don’t have that freedom anymore because I was laid off, while I was at my job I was always excited for the weekend… I enjoyed my time working.

And I never thought I’d be laid off but I was.

For any of you who are reading this please know that if you are laid off it’s never your fault.

Keep your chin up and keep living the life that you were given because life is to short to not be happy.

As much as I really love these videos, I can’t help but think we’re missing a huge part of the problem here: the economic system we live in prioritises the profits of wealthy shareholders over the well-being of ordinary people. Most people simply cannot find a job that they find fulfilling that pays well because there are so few, even though often badly paid jobs create the most wealth, see teachers as an example. We’re also not wired to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Nor do we need to! Trials of shorter work weeks have consistently shown that productivity is much better when people work less for the same pay.

Idk man I just think we should remember this isn’t all on us as individuals. Society itself has to change for the better too,

Well, this video just confirmed for me why the Great Resignation took off. It’s so damn sad and sobering how much of our lives are wasted at places we don’t want to be because we fear of being homeless or starving. And yet we’re never off from work enough to be able to even enjoy the home we have to work to live in.

Don’t work

We are all wage slaves indoctrinated to think that working 80% of our lives away is a good, productive thing that we must do to deserve our survival. It takes an average of 20 to 30 years just to pay off the roof that you barely get to spend time under. Meanwhile, that ownership class only has to work 10% or less, at the expense of the working class. Our youth, our time, our strength, our best years, our loved ones, and our health have been taken from us so that a handful of people can live in a state of free time and luxury. We need to re-evaluate housing, and we NEED to upgrade the legal work schedules immediately. I've given a year to a company, and in that year, so many of my own personal life/social/errands have just piled up to the point where this job takes EVERYTHING. I have NO ENERGY for ANYTHING else I might want to do to make life worth living. I'm getting out of this job. We should not have to give our entire life to companies just to exist and survive. We are slaves. They don't teach you it that way, but that's what we are. We are cattle and nothing more to the ones who get to decide.

This is exactly why I searched for this video! I thought about this very thing when I was at my last job, because I would get completely exhausted and burned right out 6 out of 7 days. And I started telling my family, "Is this what life's about? Being stressed all day at work, running around on your feet all day, and then too tired to do anything after work (or visit anybody)? And then too exhausted on your first day off to go anywhere or do anything, and then finally gain energy on your second day off, so that you can finally do things that need doing? I am now aspiring to be an artist. Because in today's workforce, companies are understaffed, which means that everyone gets overworked. Especially if you have a coworker who slacks off and you end up having to do their job too. So I am really hoping that I don't have to go back to that again (or not full-time anyway).
