Balanced Dog Training or Purely Positive Dog Training? (It makes a big difference)

The dog training world has become very broken and fractured in recent decades.

Different factions are promising that you should train your dog one way while other groups say there's only one way to train a dog.

There are TONS of ways to train a dog...

Having said that, on a core training level, there are two ways that are most common:
- Balanced dog training
- Purely positive dog training

Both have their positives and negatives.

But one of them DEFINITELY wins when we're talking about science based, results-oriented, dog training that actually SOLVES some of the big problems like dog aggression, leash pulling, bad manners, not coming when called, anxiety, and so much more.

In this training video I get into how to recognize the style of training that is best for your dog and how to actually best implement it for best results.

I believe herm sprenger prong collars are the safest thing to walk my dog on. I use a prong collar. I also use an ecollar. Not to punish. I use it to communicate with my dog that he needs to be here now. I use an ecollar for safety not a ‘quick fix’. I have been using an ecollar on my dog for about two months now. My dog actually appears to be happier. He get to roam free outside more and actually get to be a dog not a pet. Ecollars are not to provide a ‘quick fix’. Like I said I have been using an ecollar on my dog for about two months. He is no where near where he was a couple months ago but he still has room to learn. I also believe that dog training is not a one size fits all. I started my dog with purely positive. I would work with him everyday! But his behaviors kept getting worse. So that’s when I moved to balance training. After a couple months I saw improvement. After four months he was walking almost perfect on a leash!

Great video! When used correctly tools like prongs and ecollars can do wonders along side training! My dog used to be extremely anxious when walking past yards with barking dogs but when using the prong collar shes so much calmer and willing to listen!
Love these tools so much! So much less stressful for my dog!

I really wanted to hear what you had to say, but it was way too hard to filter your voice from the background noise. Why, oh why do people think that every video must have music in the background? We’re here for what you have to say, not to listen to music. Shame.

I am listening to this video, because I want to see what someone proposes as an alternative to “positive only” . But I expect that person to know what is positive only training. And it is NOT training with “love and kisses only”. This just shows to me (and I write this before I have finished listening, if I do finish) that this trainer just repeats what he has heard somewhere. But has never done the effort to assist to a good R+ seminar, has never seriously tried to.

What if I already have the ecollar system you’re using? Can I get your 60 day training for a lesser amount?

I am so pleased that you said these things take month and month of training because a lot of dog trainers can be very miss lead.

I think you have a lot of good to say but the background music is distracting.

I can't imagine using balanced training on a child, spouse, friend.

I like your teachings and advices but the annoying musical background makes it hard to watch until the end.

All positive only dog trainers should be totally banned. The horrific things I’ve seen with these idiots training dogs is jaw dropping. EG a client of mine was told to let the dog bite the child to get it out of the dogs system & then he will feel better.😮

'Its too difficult'... sounds like laziness to me

Oh. Sad. Was looking for some great scientific literature but this is all just opinion and conjecture. Why is it that the only ones who include links to the scientific literature are the r+ trainers?

If I had to think of an example of a dog that was truly "balanced, " it would be a dog that -  regardless of age, breed or drive - was confident, had been guided into making the right choices, and was allowed to think and learn without constantly being corrected. So yes, there's more than one way to train a dog. But so-called "balanced training" isn't one of them.

There is a reason shock collars are illegal in my country. They are vile and abusive. Training takes effort. This is just being lazy. My dogs do as I ask because of the bond we have. There is nothing balanced about this. It is purely adhesive. Absolutely disgusting.
