It’s no secret that being overweight or obese can increase your risk for numerous health problems, including stroke, some cancers, heart disease, and depression. What many people don’t realize, however, is that we can suffer all these problems even if we’re normal weight or underweight. Scientists have even coined a phrase for this phenomenon: “thin on the outside, fat on the inside,” or TOFI. Instead of being “overweight,” these people are “under-lean” (i.e., they don’t have enough muscle) and have a little extra weight around the middle, or “belly fat.” TOFIs have the metabolic features of a prediabetic obese person: Low muscle mass, inflammation, high triglycerides, low good cholesterol, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking about “skinny fat,” why it can be worse than obesity, and how to address it.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens.

Of all the many great YouTube health advocates this Dr is at the top of his class. I consider it a privilege to have an opportunity to listen.

Thanks! My husband and I were just talking about this! I'm 49 he's 50 and we are both thin and excersize, but say, just because we look good we don't actually know how healthy we are inside. We eat what we think is healthier but I've become so confused on what that is!!? I go back and forth on should I be plant based or more carnivore. I plan on reading your What the heck should I eat book. One day beans are good then they're bad! I've read books from Dr. Esselstyn, Furman, Greger, Gundry. You can see why I got confused! My brother sent me these books and now he went more carnivore 😅. I'm still going to get blood work. Our best freind was 32 when he died of massive heart attack in our kitchen. He was a little overweight but you would think age would be on his side. My dad was 55 when he had a quadruple bypass and looked pretty healthy on outside and was bike riding didn't smoke or drink. Hopefully your book will give me some clarity.

I can relate to skinny fat. I got down to 116 pounds in 2021 and I still had excess fat especially around my stomach. My A1C and fasting glucose have been in the prediabetic range and my LDL cholesterol is 125 (or more).

People need to take personal responsibility for their life and health.
The general over all health of people has declined the last few decades.
Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences.
There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese.
What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications.
Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks.
Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods. Being thin is a sign of good health. Being over weight or obese is a sign of bad health. Poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity are contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Is that statue behind you back there normal weight obese or tofi? On a more serious note I know south east asians on a larger population level tend to have a very limited personal fat threshold. It does vary from individual to individual tho.

I’ve never thought of obesity as a cause of disease. Isn’t what causes obesity the cause of disease? An unhealthy lifestyle?
