Hi all - a tip that I have since found that may be useful to you. When making natural glass tiles with the hydroponic tiles, doing it as shown by deconstructing them will lose the metal ore needed to build the tile. To get around this you can build the hydroponic tiles 1 space lower, and use the empty storage command on the tile, which will form the natural glass tile above. If you also do not route any pipes through this new tile (although you may want to for cooling), you can completely avoid losing any materials or having anything buried inside the new tile.

Your tutorial bits really are great. You really have the perfect voice (imo) for this kind of content too, legitimately you sound like the ONI David Attenborough.

You are literally the reason I have not lost a dupe, died in the first 10 cycles, and have me in space and working on my sustainability. I'm working on my new bases location and farms and you are my go to source. Keep up the good work

I found another nice method to make natural glass tiles. Put tiles below where you want the natural glass tiles and lay a pipe above it. Fill the pipes with liquid glass, then use the scissor tool to disconnect the pipes from any inputs/outputs so the liquid glass won't move. Then use a dupe with plumbing to empty the pipes. The liquid glass bottles will fall to the ground and form the natural glass tile, and no materials will be buried.

One additional tip to spawn natural tiles, that is the basis behind the "empty storage" natural tile spawner:

If you drop a "bottle" of a liquid, and it freezes while sitting on a solid tile, it will form a natural tile.

You can combine this with the "empty pipe" command, available to duolicants with the plumber trait, to force create bottles of glass out of pipes. These then freeze into natural tiles shortly after touching the ground if the ground is reasonably thermally conductive.

You will need to be quick with your empty pipe command to make sure the glass in the pipes doesn't crack, as well as careful with your plumbing so you get your glass in the pipe above where you want it.

I generally use insulated ceramic piping to do this, and control where I want the glass to go by running liquid bridges off of a liquid glass line, where each liquid bridge has a single ceramic insulated pipe at its output, above where I want the natural tile. I'll build 5 bridges in series and run two batches of glass back to back, which will fill 5 ceramic pipes with 10kg of glass each. Then I immediately/urgently empty those 5 pipes, dropping the glass bottles to freeze into 5 natural tiles of the same mass. I deconstruct the old bridges and pipes, add new bridges and single pipes where I want my next tiles, and continue. When I hit a point where I need fewer than 5 tiles, I just place a liquid vent after my final bridge and run until the segment after each bridge is full. The extra glass I use to repair my lead suits.

This is similar to the hydroponics emptying approach, in that both create glass natural tiles that aren't entombing anything. You can intentionally entomb if needed. This approach also keeps the natural tiles at a consistent 10kg mass; rarely relevant, but I appreciate the consistency. If emptying the glass in a vacuum over insulated tiles, it may take a while to cool as well; I generally use standard tiles underneath and replace them later if needed.

The downside is the small risk of glass solidifying in the pipes. I've found I have plenty of time when using ceramic insulated pipes, but some of that may change depending on atmosphere and length of pipe. If you have insulite, that would obviously be even better.

I really enjoy your ONI videos. Would you consider a tutorial on long-term building? Basically, how to plan early for important areas and major infrastructure (eg. electrical grid/cooling and ventilation piping, etc. ) in the early game to minimize tear-downs needed for expansion.

Nice tutorial and very helpful
Pips now come in the printer too, so with a bit of luck you can get them pretty early

Hi, I don't know this featured be fixed or deleted yet but during my old time the microbio fertilizer station (the one needed to make farm room and accelerated the growth of crops) can be used on wild plants too. So in my ONI group there was a player who make pip wild wheat and add that station to make a farm room for even endgame wheat farm.

would there be a go to pip planting layout where its so far apart that seed order placement isnt relevant? of course taking a hit to efficiency

Great tutorial! I have always wanted to try sustaining a base with mostly wild farming but it was hard to get going

I dont know if you said it but a tip for everyone: Don't run pipes or something through a glass tile after you made one. You will destroy them
