My strategy for survival in Oxygen Not Included is to limit my dupe count by only taking really outstanding candidates who fill a needed role, and keep all wild plants in place and avoid digging whenever possible. This way I have free food, and less unwanted heat transfer. I tend to progress my colony at a fairly slow pace, but haven't had a death spiral happen yet.

If you are playing on No Sweat difficulty, you can survive for a long time by just keeping your dupe count low and ensuring they have access to sanitation and food. It’s often possible to survive for dozens of cycles before having to switch to advanced methods of power and oxygen production. This is a great solution for new players that are getting to grips with the basics of the game.

Once you understand the basics, it’s good to start expanding and experimenting with more systems. Of course, expansion and more complex systems also result in more complex problems so it makes sense to gradually build up to this.

The last time I played I lived in the moment, just went screw the future and didnt plan ANYTHING ahead. But I still managed to wing it for more than 100 cycles. Just kept switching locations and starting all over again. Sacrificing dupes in shortages. Just was a funny little adventure

My personal strategy is to replace diffusers with terrariums. While this might lower oxygen output (I haven't personally tried diffusers yet) it reuses your carbon dioxide and outputs polluted water for recycling later on.

Found your channel not long ago and was shocked how similar our tastes are. But unlike you I suck in Oxygen Not Included so much, that even after 50 hours I am still struggle to survive.

So please, pick up your favorite game and I am sure it will be another hit. But if you want to continue Oxygen Not Included I would like to know how to damn survive when you are bold (or desperate enough) to enter the harsh biomes where you need to establish oxygen supply and remove gems at first.

I've got a few things to add that might help:
Food early game is no issue whatsoever, the cracks you can see in the temperate biome's natural tiles can contain mealwood seeds, muckroot or hatches all of which lead to food.

Heat is also not an issue if you can manage it properly: in the normal spaced out terra maps you will almost always find multiple water sources some key ones being cool slush and cool salt slush geysers - their output can be used for cooling, coolant in refineries, water for plants, water for oxygen, water for research and sometimes even all at once!

Also this downwards spiral of doom you describe is more an issue of getting bored of the game because you can't find a way to solve a difficult problem or that you arent lucky enough to have an easy solution. For this game the wiki and the database (the book at top right of the screen at all times) are must haves if you want to work out good ways to play as there are minimal to no spoilers unless you specifically search for them. Youtube is also a great place to learn how to play with starter guides such as this to help new players but I find that watching the advanced players start a new game can also be a great way to maximise efficiency in ways you might have never thought of before.

As a final note I know that this sounds like instructions on how to play the game, but Oxygen Not Included is a sandbox game in which you are the printing pod, you are the one who can tell your dupes what they need to do and when they do it and how they do it and who does it and how much fun they will have while doing it and you have the luxuary of being able to save and reload old saves whenever you want so when your dupes pee in your clean water supply you have the option to not go into a long depressive episode while you try and pump your entire water pool through a chlorine room to kill the germs but instead just go back half a day and fix your toilet issues.

I love the very early game and don't have a problem. My issue is a bit later on where it's like "now what do I do?" as everybody is idling because I'm afraid to commit to storming the surrounding biomes full of chlorine or hydrogen for some dumb unknown reason.

Thanks for this! it's nice to see a beginners guide that isn't an hour plus long. I just got ONI on sale and played maybe 45 minutes before I realized they were all gonna die. I'm excited to get experimenting and trying but without a handful of fundamentals I think I would have struggled for a long while
