Overcome Emotional Eating With This 2 Part Strategy

Food is what your body needs to survive, but food is more than nourishment. It can be used as a form of emotional support to help us celebrate happy occasions and soothe painful moments. Food is a blessing, but it can feel like a curse when you find yourself eating more for emotional support than nourishment. When this happens, it is tempting to force change by denying yourself food. However, this approach backfires.

Overcoming emotional eating requires more than willpower. In this video, I will share a two-part strategy that will leave you feeling in control of food rather than the other way around.

I wish I could like this video more than once. I have been on an emotional eating streak since April, and I've felt like a bottomless pit. I made a conscience effort to get back on track, starting August 1. I'm 3 days in, and so far so good... so I'll say, "That went well."
Thank you again Dr Becky!

Thanks for addressing a topic that so many other experts, like Dr. Fung, tend to ignore (maybe because of lack of personal experience?). I think it’s really important to understand the difference between “hunger” and “urge to eat”. Very little of my extra weight came from eating that happened when I was actually hungry.

I make vege lentil and meat bone soups in the slow cooker. Having portion sized frozen soup available has become my go-to during the tougher emotional times. I feel better knowing that it's healthier than junk food, even though it doesn't deal with comfort eating per se.

"That went well" it's a great strategy to avoid emotional eating; it can also be used by many people who have tendency to complain all the time.
If only people realize how many good things happen in their life every day their cortisol level would also go down and weight loss with it.
Great video Dr. Becky

Always great information Dr Becky. Emotional eating is real!! (I have a tendency sometimes to not chew my food properly, it’s not like I have a pack of wolves around me fighting for food. I am trying to remind myself to SLOW DOWN & properly chew my food). I pray Dr Keith is mending well. God bless 🙏 you both. Love from Canada.

I hear you Dr. Becky! It's also important to check into how you're feeling at the moment mindless, self-medication (emotional eating) seems like the best option. Acknowledging the feelings in real time and processing and being gentle with oneself is very important. "Emotional Eating" is only a diversion from avoiding the sensations of feeling. We can't be happy all the time, but the sun always comes out after the storm. Stay present in the moment and I wish folks mindfulness on their journey!!

You had me at "...computer update taking too long..."! UGH! But I will add "That went well" to my daily encouragements. The one that has been really turning things around, especially when the computer is updating or I can't eat what I'm craving, is to ask myself, "What else can I do?" or "What can I do instead?". I find there's always something positive I can engage with and once I've started on that instead of the thing I couldn't do, the craving passes. Thanks again, Dr. Becky, for the encouragement!

Great refreshment for me. I intermittent fast daily 20hr + and it helps. I am also finally 100% sugar free for 6 months. I have to constantly ask myself ... are you hungry or upset? I make a lot of improvements to choose health over instant gratification. It is not easy journey but I keep going and keep my eyes on health benefits rewards. One think really helped me to daily meditate and journal. Thank you!!

I resonate with reframing things … my coach once said… “you’re a hard worker” vs my thoughts which were I’m a horrible desperate overweight person chasing an unattainable goal. Reframing works. Being triggered and reaching for habit comfort eating foods is redirectable for me for the first few times. Then I am left with a building anxiety. This is the element that changing my behavior and thoughts ..: which I’m completely capable of… that isn’t addressed. I haven’t found anything that immediately reduces the stress or even really just fends it off.. as well as eating. I can’t exercise at the office, I can’t talk on the phone with a trusted friend at a moments notice, I can’t take a long walk while taking care of my small children. Etc etc. if there is a structured thought exercise, list of questions, a 30 second protocol I can follow.. I’d love to adopt that into my toolbox for the anxiety that grows exponentially. Thank you for this video. :)

I love keto so far 7 weeks in . The struggle is comfort eating. The hand to mouth problem. I will continue with keto.
