As a Christian, I believe what you’re feeling is the conviction of the Holy Spirit. And I can say from experience this is the reason I stepped away from pursing acting. My convictions were too strong and I had to turn down 90% of the auditions that were sent my way. The industry is so full of sex, drugs, alcohol, and evil and I couldn’t allow my peace to be at stake for the sake of landing a gig. I know it’s so difficult (it was for me) BUT, you’ll know where the line is when you don’t have to question it at all. I know the Lord will show you what He wants you to do ❤️❤️❤️

If you think you will regret taking a role because it goes against your beliefs then reject it. Life is too short to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or has you sacrificing your own principles. Other roles will pop up.

India, at the end of the day you are with yourself 24/7. Yes you can think of yourself as a role model but you cannot live your authentic self by trying to please your followers. Whatever you decide, your real followers would understand. Lots of love ❤️

I remember reading about another Christian actor and he said he would never do a movie that was a slap in the face to god and that being an actor is about playing someone differently from you and that he would be willing to play someone who was the total opposite of him as long as the message of the movie wasn't anti god and the message was something he believed in. I hope this perspective helps you with this problem.

From my personal experience, if you feel this burdened about this topic it is probably the Holy Spirit trying to communicate to you. I know its easy for me to say since I am not going through it, but possibly God is asking you to follow His guide in life and trust that by turning down some of these roles He is preparing you for something greater. Whenever I have felt the tug to go against the current in college (STEM major so my Christian views frequently arent appreciated lol) I have never once regretted it! God has always shown up in BIG ways and it has only grown my faith more. Perhaps this is a similar circumstance for you? Obviously, this is only a decision you can make yourself, but thats just some of my thoughts! Wish you the best in your acting ventures!! :)

From an older woman of faith to a younger woman of faith, I encourage you to use Philippians 4:8 as your guide. Trust God to bring you the roles that will further your career without compromising your morals. So few these days are willing to stand on their principles. Be different. Be a light. Hugs!

Actors live in a world of fiction. It’s all make believe. Just because someone plays a murderer in a movie doesn’t make them one in real life. The actor playing a bad character isn’t corrupting their morals by doing so. You should do whatever you, as a person, are comfortable with. Don’t worry about how others might think of it. If you are good with it, then do it. Actors entertain by becoming what they are not and telling a story. Choose a story you want to be a part of. Choose characters that interest you.

IMO, it all depends on the story itself, meaning that if you're playing a woman cheating on her husband in movie/show/whatever that, in the end, represents cheating as bad and negative, then your role is actually positive, and you're setting up a good example for the viewers. :)

I recently read Dick Van Dyke's biography and he said he made a rule for himself that he would never take a role in something that his kids couldn't watch... I don't know if that's helpful or not, but I thought it was a good mindset and maybe a good starting point for figuring out what you're comfortable with.

You’re right that the characters you play do not represent you as a person. Always do only what you feel comfortable with BUT also remember that as an actress what you do is completely separate from who you are! Don’t hold yourself back worrying about what other people are going to think. Do what you decide you are personally okay with!

I'm going to be the stick in the mud. I would ask myself, "What would God do?" "Would I be embarrassed to have God sitting front and center while I pretended to be raunchy?" "How do I feel about my church family seeing this or my future kids?"
My thoughts are; if you are not provided a role where you would be comfortable acting them out in front of God, then maybe God is saying acting isn't the path he has choosen for you.
You also said it feels like you need to broaden what you won't do for several reasons. Are you sure this isn't God speaking to you?
God is great. He has you in His hands.

"So many people DO in life, and that story SHOULD be told." I think this was a great point you hit on. I feel like, when it comes to physical aspects or extreme/vulgar language, you probably know what you are comfortable with, and should stick to that. But when it comes to a character's personality and story, you can think of it in this way that you just said. Should this story be told? It might not be a story that pertains much to your life, but it could still be an important one to tell. That doesn't mean that only the deep and meaningful roles are the one's worth your while. But it can be more of a litmus test when you ARE faced with parts that feel more questionable to you. And you know we've always got your back!! :)
