How To Use A Retinoid

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that are helpful for acne/blackheads, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and overall healthy skin. There are over the counter retinols and prescription retinoids, like tretinoin or Retin-A. Adapalene 0.1% used to be a prescription retinoid but now it’s over the counter (e.g. Differin).

Everyone’s sensitivity to retinoids is different, so it’s better to start off with a lower strength or something that’s over the counter and gradually work your way up to something stronger if tolerated.

By the way, if your skin can tolerate it, it is OK to mix benzoyl peroxide with adapalene. You just can’t mix it with retinols or tretinoin. Some formulations of retinols can also be used in the morning.

And of course don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

Edit: I appreciate y’all leaving your opinions but this was months ago. It may not sound like a smart skincare decision and I admit it wasn’t. But I had already tried using each product separately for a month and saw little results. My acne was severe and I was desperate and those three things were the only thing that calmed my skin down at the time. Please don’t tell me to use one or the other or that one is better for me, you don’t know that and you don’t know my skincare needs, I do. Just benzoyl peroxide won’t help my skin and just tretinoin won’t help my skin. Both CAN be used together if your skin can tolerate it and I have pretty resistant skin. I’m already very educated on this topic and fully understand how each product works, please don’t bring your personal experiences into this because each acne case is unique. I welcome conversation and discussion but please engage politely or don’t comment at all, there is no reason to be rude.

For the last point there: I've had three dermatologists say using Benzaclin (mix of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin) and tretinoin together at night is okay LOL >_>

For those starting out with retinol, only do it once a week at first! Upgrade slowly.

I use BP 4% wash in the morning, salicylic acid toner spot treatment around 4pm and then retinol .1% at night
