3:19 good reasons for that :

1- quality is good enough
2- dvd drives are everywhere, computers, cars and playstation
3- dvd is cheap, you can get new dvd for 5$ at some stores and on amazon
4- many titles are only available on dvd

Keep buying. It's the only way to ensure that physical media stays around. Buy the films you like and make sure they are ones you will rewatch.

I'm about 1100 deep in my collection and I love it.

I will support physical media as long as it's available. This includes books, games, music and movies.
And still dreaming of that blu-ray release of Babylon 5.

One of my worries at the moment is that if I don't buy some of these limited addition releases, I won't be able too buy them at a later date, or I will be able to buy them but at an insane price.

The issue I have with physical media moving closer and closer towards being primarily catered to a collector's market is that limited editions can be expensive and hard to get, and if you miss them when they come out then you miss it and maybe you can't get that movie any more (take, for example, what Twilight Time used to do). I like having those nice limited edition options available if I want something special for that movie, BUT I also like having standard, more affordable, readily available, mainstream stores, options available as well.

I feel like the reason why 4k isn't selling as well as DVD is because at least here in Canada it is hard to find physical media in stores. Walmart rarely ever gets 4K copies of something unless its a big movie

Just watch how quickly people are converted BACK to physical media, once a digital movie that they BOUGHT and “OWNED, ” VANISHES from their collection. Once the license expires and your streaming channel no longer has the rights to broadcast said film or TV show, YOUR copy goes BYE-BYE as well. NO REFUND.

As my screen name states, I'm all about physical media (cassettes, LPs, CDs, DVDs, Blurays and Books/Graphic Novels). I still have belief in the formats and will continue to purchase the releases in each that I like and want to own, but I truly feel you're right in that the 'collectors' are what is driving all of these formats. The good thing is that the collectors niche is growing as it's become an 'in once the bubble bursts on collecting I'll be curious where we'll end up. All I know is that I'm in it until the wheels fall off.

The other day a coworker asked me exactly what a "blu-ray" is. It felt like I got asked what a lawnmower was lol

My first choice in physical media is blu ray. But unfortunately here is Australia blu ray new releases are $30, dvd is $20 and 4k is $36. Our wages are higher than in the US but these prices are still too high and maybe thats why dvd sales are better because they are cheaper.
I have recently thrown out all of my movie covers and I store them in dvd albums now. It took me a long time to do and I filled 2 large recycling bins. I had maybe 1000 movies and they were taking over my house! I have kept my collectible special edition movies covers/booklets/posters however. Keep up the great work Jeff.

I’m happy Criterion joined the 4K world, but they need to work on their prices. Criterion is generally over priced and now their 4Ks are excessively high. It makes it very difficult for collectors who have to budget and make choices to get the best versions of releases. I buy a lot but I have to choose which release is more important and that sadly leaves me missing out on a lot of great titles.

Back in 2020 I purchased on eBay Gone with the Wind collectors edition for $250. I was happy to secure the buy because at the time prices were sky rocketing . I can buy it on Amazon right now for $39.99. I hate myself .

I collect dvds, nothing to do with price, the fact is I don't give an F about "best picture quality" or whatever, I just want the movie there to be able to pick out and watch anytime I want without being dependent on a streaming service. DVDs are easy to get a hold of. I hated when I wanted to watch a movie and couldn't get it anywhere online. I've about 750 there now and I'm still picking stuff up. I'm in Europe though

My worry is that standard blu rays become a weird middle child between DVD and 4k Blu Ray, where DVDs are still the most popular and 4Ks are the ones made for the collectors. Like right now a lot of 4K blu rays are being released with new transfers, and often a standard blu ray that also has the new transfer bundled in...except there's no way to buy the new transfer on standard blu Ray seperately. And as a soon to be college student, this is not the time for me to be upgrading to 4k as its simply too expensive.

It's so weird to me that DVD is still so massive. Bluray movies are so cheap nowadays, there's tons of movies you can find for just around $7. The only time I go for a DVD is if it's something that's not available on bluray and even then I'm hesitant.

What sucks about streaming is that, since it's now the only way to RENT movies (just to try at a lower cost than buying to see if you like it), unless you want to go all the way to Bend, Oregon to rent from the last Blockbuster on earth - well, there is the local library, but the selection is very limited - is that, in my experience at least, the stream BUFFERS like every 15 minutes or so, even after resetting my Roku box (and yes, it has the latest firmware). I pay $$ for 200 Mbps internet and have a top-of-the line cable modem/router. This is unacceptable to say the least.

I will ALWAYS buy physical media- which includes DVD's, CD's, cassettes, and vinyl.

What I like about vinyls having a resurgence is I can buy CDs for like 5 or 10 dollars or or 2 dollars at the pawn shops
