Panasonic just released a new 4K player to the US market, the DP-UB450 for less than 172.00 at Amazon. BREATHE.

It is nice to see a collector who is not deluded and has a pragmatic view as to the future of physical media.

I would only be worried if Panasonic said goodbye

Physical media will never die out. I'm a dvd and blu ray collector since day one. If Physical media blu ray disc was dying out, you would not have blu ray disc being made. Shout Factory, Vinegar Syndrome, 88 Films Seven Films would not be making disc if there was not a percent of fans buying disc.

I think physical media is dying but oh, well, there are not any new movies I want to see let alone own.

4K physical media market is growing in the U.K. Maybe folks are realising that you never truly own a streaming title you buy or that the quality of the picture from a disc is far superior to streaming. How long that continues is difficult to say.

I’m not fussed if LG have left the 4K player market as they are not known for the quality of their players. They are not the connoisseur’s choice. That would be Panasonic.

If greedy companies reduced streaming titles to own to reflect the true costs of production instead of trying to charge a similar price to physical media then physical media would be dead.

There will always be a market for physical media but it might just be a reduced one, filled with boutique labels who can produce a product worth buying.

For now, keep slippin’ my guy.

The history of Laserdisc has shown how the future is likely to be If you can keep the players maintained eg lasers and drives and the avoid the long term effects of Disc Rot I would guess personal collections to be all right also I expect Boutique labels to begin Merging as there markets continue to shrink

As long as Slipcovers are still being manufactured we will be ok my guy!

LG could dominate the market if they added slipcovers to their players

You’re right physical media is over. It’s just a collectors thing now like records but I don’t think there’ll be a profit for at least 20 to 30 years. This media has been overproduced.

What I hate is I cannot stand Sony, their players are so region locked that they won't play 0 region discs

I'm not worried, my guy, I have two Sony x800m2 4k players in two separate rooms, I bought my wife a Sony Ubp700 4k for her office and bought another X800m2 4k player that is brand new in the box for back up two months ago. I have a Sony x1100es 4k players, which was my first one, that started messing up, so I had my guy (electronics expert repair guy) repair it, which I put back in the box ... I have five total and two back-ups. I have really bad Ocd, so I stock pile things to have extra ... by the time these break down, I'll be close to or dead.... I'm slipping alright all the way to the bank when I decide to sell my over 3800 blu ray collection with my huge boutique label LE box sets, rare oop slips and rare steelbooks. I have about 400 to 450 still unopened that are going for 175 to 225 right now (most of them) and It'll be hard to part with all of them, but one day, I'll want the cash to party hard again before my time is up.... Steve, bro, I'm always FN slippin....😂😂😂😂

It’s not about what if Walmart pulls out what if Amazon pulls out as most
Psychical media sales online are from Amazon

Panasonic still makes blue ray players as well.

Steve, as long as Warner Bros. doesn't stop manufacturing their own physical media discs, we're going to be okay.

Thanks for the info 'food for thought'. Gives me something to think about.

I have somewhat 'insured' my collection by digitizing every DVD and BluRay (approx 3000) over the past many years that occupy a Synology Media Home Server with a footprint of approx 1 foot by 1 foot square. And began doing the same for my 4k collection (500 or so) but only for my favorite movies, because these disc use up a lot of space on the server.

Otherwise, I've got 4 4k players and a couple of Play Stations. But, in the end, I think digitizing discs to a Home Server is a good way to go if concerned about a future lack of 4k players.

It might cost a bit to start up this endeavor (digitizing each disc to a digital file on a Home Server) but a real collector might want to consider this kind of 'insurance ' for the future of their DVD, BluRay and 4K collection.
