Where did the movies go? - The State of Physical Media at Barnes & Noble in October 2024

In this video, I show you a couple Barnes & Noble stores that have apparently undergone some recent renovations (or are just new-ish). The store in Cheyenne, WY appears to be a newer-style smaller store, while the one in Loveland, CO is more of an older-style, large store, but that seems to have gone through some renovations. The physical media selection in both is much smaller than it used to be, so I thought I'd take a few video clips to show what it looks like in October 2024.

Target Has Completely Got Rid Of Their Movies Entirely Which I Found Out As Of Recent. Very Unfortunate Target Has Turned To Best Buy Getting Rid Of Their Physical Media.

My "Barnes & Noble" in Glendale, CA still has Physical Media but ends up dividing into different corners of the shelves while the Valencia location at least gets it right but also mixed up. The Burbank location however doesn't any Physical Media as its always been since the 90s. It's really sad when smaller independent stores such as "Book-Off" gets tons more than regular retails like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. Which the latter two aren't getting anymore unless some Target location might have them left. Might as well buy plenty of gift cards for ebay and Amazon to order them!

In 2022, my local B&N downsized their physical media area to just a couple of shelves with new releases and common titles. However, I visited two other B&N's in my county, and (as of late 2023), the physical media areas in those ones were still completely intact and stocked. My friend and I were giggling like children when we were walking up to one of the stores and saw the big "DVD'S/MUSIC/CDS" sign in the back from the front windows.

As someone in New York I think our Barnes and Nobles are relatively varied in whether or not they'll have big titles. There's one location with a pretty big media section I always go to for Criterion sales

This is a bit interesting to me since my local Barnes and Noble doesn’t seem to have a movies section(but I could be wrong). My local Target last time I checked still has movies although it’s just mostly records, books and games and electronics there. My local Walmart still has movies so that’s good. We are certainly living in the future of streaming and dying physical media.

Cheyenne used to be full size until they swapped locations with Natural Grocers.

It's better than not having any so people need to appreciate it

Cheyenne, Wyoming isn’t a small community it’s a midsize city like around 65, 000 people and it’s known for being Wyoming’s capital

I have a Barnes and noble near me but there’s no physical media in it so I went to another one in a mall last week and it has physical media. I didn’t buy anything but it had some newer titles in it like SpongeBob another 100 episodes dvd.

I want to physical media to last forever, we need it to make it bigger and we need to make stronger and we had to make it greater!

Most places are replacing their physical media with vinyl. When the Targets near me remodeled, guess what stayed behind. The vinyls. The sections for them got bigger too. Who is even buying vinyl at a rate that makes Target think that they should just get rid of everything else. Same kind of thing has happened to a few Walmarts near me, barely any or no movies at all, but plenty of vinyl. It's sad what shopping in store has become, I prefer doing it more than shopping online because I will always know the condition of the items when I get them home, as compared to what happens to them during shipping.

I feel as though buying physical new is just too expensive for what it is...
Goodwill selling them used for dirt cheap, Walmart trying to sell people a ripped Futurama complete series for like fifty bucks, and the looming threat of tariffs.

Why are they replacing phoscal media with 4k tvs
