Better Than 30-Day Challenges?

After completing a 30-Day challenge, you'll have learned a lesson. But what if you could also have gained a skill that you can keep for the rest of your life?

Here are a couple channels that inspired me:
@MaxsMonthlyChallenge @MikeShake

And here's a video that makes a couple good points:

The crazy graininess of this video is what happens when you wait until sunset to film your video and you crank your ISO up to the thousands because you don't own good filming lights... LESSON LEARNED!

DAY 5 of daily videos completed. :)

i would always put myself down because i wouldnt do yoga every day, a therapist said why? do it when you need too, do it when it makes you feel better, and i end up doing yoga way more because i am not punishing myself for days ive missed. its a tool in my repertoire to use when i need it for my mental health instead of another “failure”

The only 30 day challenge I've sucessfully completed was the veganuary one. I knew within about a week that this was going to be for life. It's been 6 years now.

I did journal writing for somewhat 30 days. However I now got a skill as a writer for a quarterly newsletter, and working on two articles for the spring edition

This new format where you just end your videos almost mid-sentence throws me off guard and it's so refreshing! Keep making awesome stuff :)

This might be the kick I need to actually give knitting a try! I have picked it up many times, but never long enough to get over the discomfort that I don't know what I'm doing lol

Very curious to see what skills you've chosen.

I do find some skills you lose if you don't keep using them regularly.

I see what you mean, Lefie, and your idea is a good one. However, I think 30-day challenges can have value in that you would find out if something (like coffee or Facebook) is a mindless habit or something you really enjoy. You might find that you want to keep some part of what you tried. This is what Matt D'Avella did with things like meditation (he incorporated some amount of it into his day), and with calorie-counting (he doesn't actually track calories but is more mindful now). That said, cold showers and a coffee ban are to me pointless brutality. 😃

I see what you mean. These 30 days challenges were always a bit weird to me, but I never gave it a thought. You described it perfectly.

there is much to be said for limited time challenges, to give an idea or practice time, to see if it "gels" with you, to give benefits time and space to show their worth. at 64, though, 30 days feels like WAY too big of a unit of "currency" for the time that I (might) have left. and at this point in time, I've probably done some form of whatever the challenge represents (organization, self-help, etc.) lefie, i love your vids! i look forward to what you are thinking and doing, and use your ideas and practices as a "jumping-off" point for changes that i can make. thank you!

L'essentiel avant toute chose c'est de se sentir bien dans sa peau ! les challenges sont là pour nous motiver mais sans plaisir ils deviennent des contraintes

In 2012 I did my first 30-day-challenge: 30 days learning to play Ukulele. And I still play it :) I failed all my other 30-day-challenges untill I decided to stop doing them a couple of years ago. But I thougt the same, if I want to learn a new skill I may try again, because to stick with it daily, even if it is just for 5 Miutes was really helpful for learning ukulele.

The challenge I've given myself is read a book. At least 1 a month. I used to fly through books but I didn't read as much in favour of TV, or knitting while watching tv. I figure reading is got to be better for my brain then tv.

I think my YouTube recommendations are different from yours, Lefie,
Because I haven't seen many, if any, 30-day challenges recently. 😅
That being said, I think now would be a great time for a 30-year challenge for you. 😃
You just finished your first three decades, so... there's something you could do. 😇

I refuse to do anything that would make me uncomfortable, such as taking a cold shower. I have arthritis and cold showers would be a detriment way more than a benefit. I understand the concept of stepping outside the norm and trying something new. But it's also good to know your boundaries.
