I feel like most animated movies nowadays are actually very dark. You know when you were a kid You’re like this is fine everything’s fine but in actuality everything’s super dark in these movies.

Shrek was saying that as a joke to scare the villagers off because he knew they were easily scared off. It's the dragon who eats humans that's why in the ending she eats the midget.
