How Hanna Checkers Make Testing Easy | How To Tuesday

Alkalinity Hanna Checker Steps:
Step 1: Turn the check on by hitting the button then fill the cuvette to the ten milliliter line from water from the tank. Put the sample in the checker, close the cap and hit the button and it will zero the meter in a few seconds.

Step 2: Open the reagent bottle and draw out 1mL of solution, pull back the plunger until the bottom of the 1mL line. It’s also perfectly normal for there to be a small air bubble in there.

Step 3: Gently invert the bottle five times, place back in the checker and hit the button. In a few seconds it will give you a reading which you multiply by 0.056 to get your DkH.

Phosphate Hanna Checker Steps:
Step 1: Turn the check on by hitting the button then fill the cuvette to the ten milliliter line from water from the tank. Put the sample in the checker, close the cap and hit the button and it will zero the meter in a few seconds.

Step 2: Open the packet of reagent and pour into the cuvette. Since it's a powder, it is easier if you tear two sides of the packet to ensure you get all of it out. Replace the cap and shake gently for two minutes until the powder is fully dissolved.

Step 3: Replace the cap and shake gently for two minutes until the powder is fully dissolved. Hold down the button on the check to begin the 3 minute timer. Once the timer is done it will ready your tanks phosphate in parts per million.

A few tips:
It's critical that you rinse the cuvettes out when you're done testing so the reagent dye doesn't permanently stain the glass.

It's also important that the glass cuvette is clean and free from any fingerprints before testing.

Hi;
Thanks so much. For me personally, the speaker is a "quality person". It is hard that our world is decreasing with such awesome peoples.
But the presentation and passion give us some deep meaning of life, etc. At least, it work for me;

Warm wishes from Perth;

I've been using a Hanna Phosphorus (calculates to Phosphate) tester for a few years. As mentioned previously, shaking causes micro bubbles. I gently invert the step 2 curvet and both of them are lightly tapped on my counter top to assist air bubbles in reaching the surface. My first measure is at 3 minutes and I do three measures in quick succession. They are never consistent but do provide an accurate measure and most important, a measure relative to previous tests. I rinse the curvets in RODI water, shake and wipe dry.

Best purchase I have ever made for my tank hands down.  Alk is by far the most important thing to keep track of if your keeping sps corals in a low nutrient reef and if you want to avoid spontaneous tissue necrosis.  The only thing I don't like about hannah is that they still don't have a nitrate test for saltwater! I also use the phosphate test kit which is nice but often reads zero which sometimes worries me and the powder can be difficult to get out of the package. I don't use any phosphate media just zeovit and rodi water.  But I know it has a accuracy of + or - .04 or so. One tip left out of the video is to be sure to wipe off the vial for fingerprints before putting it in the hannah checker.

For the Phosphate Checker I found a very small funnel is useful for getting all the powder out of the packet and into the vial.

I also use these meters but I find that the phosphate reagent (powder) NEVER dissolves fully. to be honest I use one for the straight tank water and the other for the tank/reagent to be sure all is well. thanks guys your videos are PRICELESS!!!

Man you guys are getting fancy. I have been wanting to try these test kits. I prefer dividing by 50 and multiplying the result by 2.8. LOL Not that it matters. Great video! I look forward to your videos.

Awesome.  I like how you guys never come across as "talking down" to those that have been in the hobby for a thousand years, and you don't belittle or baffle the brand new guy who hasn't even gotten wet yet!  Just keep doing what you're doing.  If you don't get rich, at least Karma will pay you back :)

The worse part about the phosphate checker is that it turns off after 3 minutes, but they want you to shake sample for 2 minutes. So that means you have 60 seconds to get the reagent carefully poured in and get everything situated. I easily get distracted so there are a bunch of times I have to restart the test...

Is there a reason we cant use two cuvettes. One with reagent already mixed and one with just sample water. The fact that it shuts off after a few minutes, which doesn't leave much time to mix, makes this cnecker useless kn my opinion. I dont know how many times ive had to start over because the unit shut off. Ive givin up even trying and just use two cuvettes which is not recommended and proba ly giving me false results. Also, didnt I hear they are discontinuing this unit, hope this isnt a fire sale.

Dumb question, but could I used these for my freshwater tanks?

Noticed that Hanna is now sporting black boxes that are of a different shape than earlier white ones. Do you know what the difference is?

Those are easy and great, but those reagents of alk and cal do leak out no matter how tight the lid is on, I no longer store them sideways in the boxes, leave them upright on a shelf!!

Hi, I'm wondering why on your website the "Alkalinity DKH Colorimeter HI772 Hanna Checker - Marine Water" is marked as "recommended" and why the "Alkalinity PPM Colorimeter HI755 Hanna Checker - Marine Water" is not... What makes the difference among them for one being recommended and not the other one?? Thank you.

I know theirs a 10ml line on the covet, but whats the actual mark, the bottom of the bubble/curve or the very top of the water. I usually just let the bottom of the bubble hit the 10ml mark and do all my test that way, even use a 10ml syringe to see how far it would fill up. And the bottom of the bubble/curve of water hits the 10ml mark. So i hope im doing it right

This might be a dumb question but what is the difference between the low range and the high range phosphate test kits and is it necessary to check both

can you try the hanna calcium checker. Ive been using one for a few weeks and getting inconsistant results.

I have never got the phosphate to read in the .0 range. Also Hanna says not to shake it just to invert slowly until all dissolved. When I shake mine I'll get a reading around 10 but if I slowly invert I get 0. I can also test multiple times and get different readings each time but a liquid test always showed up under 0.25. Is their any other trick to know it's right. My alkalinity checker is awesome but phosphate I don't trust.

Ok yes it is amazing But what about NitrAte test we all want it. ???

How come there is no nitrate checker? I absolutely loathe using the std API tests. The colors can be so hard to tell what level it actually is.
