These rare, unique items are also known as Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol unit rations, LRP, or LRRP (called “Lurps” or “Lurp Rats”), or MCW Meals, Cold Weather. They are packaged in brick pack pouches, they are shelf stable, and they are specifically made for the U.S. Military Special Forces. The manufacturer has received approval to package and offer these military production overrun items for resale.
What are Long Range Patrol Rations?
Originally developed in 1964 for Vietnam Special Operations Troops, the LRP is the longest running U.S. military ration still in existence today.
Long Range Patrol Ration entrees aren't just like freeze-dried foods — they are freeze-dried foods. They offer a long shelf life, typically lasting for at least 10 years and probably much longer, making them reliable, ready, and waiting for you whenever you need them. LRPs are an extremely desirable long term survival food.
LRRPs offer good-tasting, high-energy breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner options that provide tasty, high-protein meals that take up very little space or effort. Because they are lightweight, compact, and easy to store and prepare, Lurps appeal not only to survivalists and the emergency-preparedness minded, but also have captured the interest of backpackers, campers, RV & motorcycle travelers, and others as well.
The main differences between LRP's and traditional civilian freeze dried foods are:
LRP Rations have higher ratios of key protein ingredients such as beef, chicken and turkey, as mandated by the U.S. military to meet nutritional requirements for active soldiers in the field, and provide a high calorie count, more sodium, and more carbohydrates.
They are quite compact, condensly packaged in "brick pack" pouches, and take up less space and weight than standard Mountain House pouches or #10 cans of freeze dried foods.
Long Range Patrol Rations are unique and are rarely available to the general public. When they do become available outside of military circles — and only in the event there is a U.S. Government overrun — the supply is further limited due to available quantities and their popularity with active, reserve, and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces as well as an ever increasing interest from backpackers, campers, and preparedness-minded individuals.
