Something most people don’t take into consideration when discussing older players, is that the dribbling rules were completely different. That’s why when you watch old highlights, it looks like they’ve never dribbled a basketball before, and it’s because of how strict the rules for dribbling were. You couldn’t put your hand on the side of the ball, even, it had to be on top. It’s something that a lot of people don’t know, but a lot of people argue that old players were worse because they couldn’t dribble, when in reality, they were just following the rules.

This is all so silly. Yes if you could take a carbon copy of today’s players and put them into a 50s nba game they would perform very well. But that’s impossible, they would be subject to the same constraints as people like bob were at the time. This whole line of critique makes as much sense as saying that modern engineers are smarter than Isaac Newton because they know things about science that hadn’t been discovered while he was alive.

People have no idea how bad the conditions were for 1950's NBA players. Go look up at 1950's basketball ball. The damn thing had seems like a football. You are not pulling off modern dribble moves with that thing. They also played in ice cold arenas often because Hockey was the priority. They would literally throw wooden planks on top of the ice to play the game. I'm not saying the old guys were better but I am saying the current guys wouldn't play at all in 1950's conditions and maybe we should show the old guys more respect.
