Growing Spinach from Seed

It’s time to clean out that slimy spinach from the back of your fridge, right?

Spinach grows so quickly and easily from seed and it’s something we can all do even if we only have a small pot to grow it in.

Even if you’re far away from your last frost date, the good news is the time to plant your spinach seeds is coming up quickly.

This Friday I’m going seed shopping with a bunch of you, and if you haven’t signed up to join me, you’re invited!

Been growing Spinach successfully for over 50 years in the mid atlantic region. 60 days prior to the last frost sounds too early to sow. The ability to work the soil is generally what determines my first sow date with Spinach. I have sown as early as 45 days prior but have mixed results. If the soil stays too wet the seeds will germinate and rot. I plant generally every 10 days from mid march to mid april and then again in late August for my Fall Winter crop. One observation, the first and second plantings are about 10 days apart but due to soil temps germinate less than a week apart and first harvest is 3 days apart. Ive also staryed utilizing shade cloth when temps hit the mid 70s and this allows for an additional week or 2 of harvest into early summer.

Spinach was the first thing to germinate for me this year by far, in early February West coast, Canada. However, it still never went leafy, just grew stalks and went straight to seed.
