Over the weekend, the City tested out opening Sixth Street back up to cars. This is in place of closing the road down to vehicular traffic from Brazos to Red River Streets.

I was down there when they closed it down to traffic again. It seemed to me like the barriers made it harder for the police to move around. I've been going down to 6th since the mid 80s, well before they closed the streets to traffic on weekends. Eventually as more people moved to Austin so many people were going down to 6th St. that the sidewalks became congested. They experimented with closing it certain weekends when they anticipated large crowds, eventually closing it every weekend. The only way to open it to traffic safely now is if people stop going down there. That is not going to happen. All APD can do is to manage the crowds.

6th street is for walking at night. Stop trying to make this happen.

I wish the officer better defined the distinction between people there for a party atmosphere and those to go to bars. What do you know about these? One is tourists? Adults 17-20 vs 21+? It just sounds like a factor that made them want to open traffic lanes on 6th, and they’ve left that info so blurry and undefined….. also, there are so many cities globally that have spaces where 1)ppl want to enter bars while 2)ppl are stagnant and socializing outside. Madrid’s Plaza del Sol, Rome’s Campo dei Fiori, and others. If the Downtown alliance, mayor, and police see “stagnant” civilians socializing outside as an issue, then I fear people really have become anti-social. What is ideal for them? People coming downtown to drink inside, do their business, rush to their transportation, and go home….. this is like an anti-social way of enforcing safety
