I thought it is only my country that professors can’t teach us how to teach, but now I know many of us around the globe are struggling with the fact that university is all about theories and not about practicing in real situations. Thanks a lot. Keep on the good work.

Next week I'll be giving my first class to highschoolers. I'm not a teacher, just a student, and I will teach this class the entire year despite not having or persuing a teaching degree. The school can't find a qualified math teacher so the class is without a teacher atm. It sucks for them being without a math teacher, I know I wouldn't have loved math if it wasn't for my great teacher. I feel like everyone should get great math education, so I want to be the best teacher I can. Thanks for the videos!

Watching this before the school year. As a fresh English major graduate, I still have so much to learn. Thank you for this channel! I'll watch more videos in the next days.

I am an international teaching assistant teaching American college students. I discovered the video when I am looking for tips for international TAs. Though what concerns me is English, It is a huge relief to know that even native English speakers teaching ESL get nervous in their first class. Thank you for the video.

even though I didn't get the job of an ESL teacher due to age requirement (I've just graduated) my only encouragement now is having found your channel specially in my lack of knowledge of actual classroom practice distant from the abstract theories
thank you so much

Thanks Eric. This is great. Thanks for pointing out that having a fun class is different than being entertainment. This is so helpful.
I also like to point out that not making eye contact with students can convey to them that their presence is not important and the teacher doesn't have time to acknowledge them, especially if a student is shy or has low self-esteem.

I'm a Highschool graduate of 2023. I'm currently teaching as a TA, and your tips are AMAZING!
I would love to know what tips you have for fun interactive activities, other than the interview and M&M game :D

Thank you!!

Much good stuff here. This video is excellent. I'm a substitute teacher and I will integrate many tips from this video as I'm constantly facing new students.. I like the idea of standing in the middle of class as they walk in and making eye contact and keeping that contact until a student looks away. I like the reciting of rules especially respect everyone around you and be quiet when another person is speaking, then asking students to repeat those rules- I would keep it simple and use those two important rules. I like the idea of saying 3, 2, 1 then I will expect everybody to be quiet. And the practice interviewing a classmate then having each student introduce that person to the class is a fun idea when I need to fill time. About the eye contact, the John F Kennedy speech class he had at Harvard emphasized the importance of eye contact with a key saying- "don't talk to anything that can't talk back to you". That even if you are scanning a group from person to person dont begin speaking until you make eye contact with somebody.

I am currently handling an ESL class of 5 kids with level 0-1 comprehension. I have already talked to the owner of the school but they would not let me go. I am the third teacher to handle this class and now I understand why. I am at my wits end as they cannot understand the concept of rules as they are both kindergarten aged and not english speakers. Your tips have given me an idea on what to do. Hopefully it will work.
