The Psoas Major is very important in supporting the lifted leg en l'air, however, if the lumbar spine is unstable, the Psoas Major may attempt to stabilise the spine and become statically contracted where it attaches to the front of the spine. In this situation the TFL and Rectus Femoris must be recruited to lift the leg, often resulting in overuse issues and a painful hip.To find out more about 'The Anatomy of the Hip' head over to The Ballet Blog website.

What are the exercises for the back to free up the hip flexors? How should they check they are using correct muscles when extending?

Thank you for the information! How do you go about strengthening the deep back muscles? I have a lot of pain in the hip flexor when doing developpes and of course I would like to get rid of it!

I gave up dancing because of this. Chronic psoas and hip flexor inflammation.
