In a thrilling story inspired by actual events from the Battle of the Atlantic, Tom Hanks stars as a first-time captain who leads a convoy of allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers across the treacherous waters of the “Black Pit” to the front lines of WW2. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy Nazi U-boats in order to give the allies a chance to win the war. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider from a screenplay by Hanks.

What I found truly fascinating about this scene is that they were able to create tension without even showing us the enemy. It was a silent battle with little "action" yet I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. Truly impressive

I really liked how the movie showed that every crew member have a very precise task in combat.

I found this movie mentally exhausting in a good way. Most movies have breaks between action scenes that allow the viewer to calm down. This movie didn't. There was constant tension and the use of sonar pings incorporated into the background really gave off the alertness. By the end of the movie, I felt like I had just been awake for 72 hours!

Tom Hanks is working on a military retirement. Well done.

I'm a former sailor, was in for 5 years, and I have to say (off topic) that a true injustice was done to Captain McVay of the USS Indianapolis. That crew went through a hell that only probably a few people can possibly imagine, and that Skipper did everything in his power to save his crew and his ship. Before, during, and after the attack.

I love that moment when the sonar operator just yanks off his headphones to immediately tell the captain what's going on, cutting away just those few moments of lag where the submarine could slip past.

The war of the Atlantic is endlessly fascinating to me.

It was a perfect pitting of wits and skill against an opponent. Each side had their own advantages and disadvantages. The dynamic of the hunter vs the hunted constantly was in flux. The coordination of the crew at the overall command of one man to bring giant metal behemoths to conflict is very impressive.

A fictional group of ships, on a very real mission, fighting a very real enemy. This is cinema at it's finest.

Killed 35 men without ever seeing them. Topside, it was "scratch one sub", down below, boys screamed for their mama as the water drowned desperate tears and buried them in a coffin of treacherous steel

Crew: We got ourselves a u-boat!!!
Captain: There's five dozen men whom I've just killed. Killed inside an iron coffin.

I like how the movie gave us only the perspective of Greyhound and not the other ships. Feels like were actually serving onboard the ship with them.

There is a mutual respect between sailors friend or foe. Asides from the politics and reasons for the war they deal with the same shit. Uniforms are slightly different.

What makes me really think is the fact that the story told in this movie wasn't a one off. 450 convoys made the mad dash to and from the US and UK during the war. Roughly 100 battles raged involving convoys and another 1, 000 involving single ships. 3, 500 Allied merchant ships and 175 Allied warships would be sunk for the loss of some 72, 000 Allied sailors. The Axis lost some 800 submarines and 30, 500 submariners, as well as 47 other warships. Stories like Greyhound happened all the time, even though the likelihood your convoy would make it across the pond unbothered was higher than being engaged.

If you guys like this I recommend "The Enemy Below" 1957. For a movie from that time it holds up pretty well imo. Similar to greyhound in plot.
