Greyhound 2020
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause's first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic.

as a Canadian, getting to see HMSC Dickey had me and my friends cheering. but the the one thing that makes me smile more is the fact they used the ship HMCS Sackville. She is the last flower class corvette and she is right in the harbor down the road from my. i walk by her alot and she is so beautiful

I see a lot of people questioning why the U-boat surfaces. The book states that the U-boat is damaged and has issues with a depth rudder which is locked in ascending position, which causes the U-boat to surface as soon as it tries to move while underwater. The German U-boat commander thus decides to cause what damage he can with the U-boat's surface guns, before the U-boat inevitably is destroyed. Before that happens, the German U-boat desperately yet masterfully manages to stay too close to either ship for any of them to cause catastrophic damage to the vessel. This attack is literally a suicide charge on the part of the Germans.

This is all explained through the American captain's (Krause's, here played by Tom Hanks) inner monologue as he analyzes the situation. In a movie, it would be cheesy or downright bad writing to have a character do an exposition dump explaining this. However, there *is* an officer in this scene who points out that the sub "looks damaged", and that's all the clues which the movie format can afford to give us, the audience, without going cheesy.

It's really a great movie. This needs really to be a DVD. Just saying. So people can know about the battle of the Atlantic. To the beginning of the war to the end of the war. Great pick.

You know what would be great, a movie about Taffy 3.

Now that would be one hell of a naval battle movie

is it just me, or did it look like the U-boat was not only playing mind games with the two US ships, but was the U-boat also trying to cause a "friendly fire" incident where the two ships to sink each other?

Pretty cool moment to see HMCS Dickey sail past to pursue and engage the U-Boat, and hear the US crewmen cheering them on.

I watched this movie when it came out and watch the clips when I came across them. Being a Navy vet, I'm a sucker for any movie about the Navy. This one had me on the edge of my seat. I was a Radarman so seeing the ancient scopes and other gear was pretty cool.

This kind of naval combat, surface vs sub-surface warships is just insane. No advanced radar, no missiles, NO TARGETING. Analog everything.

My grandfather served on anti submarine duties on the North Atlantic and Arctic convoys. I haven’t seen this film but this clip was amazing - literally found myself holding my breath. I’m off to watch the movie now!

I've been aboard a WWII destroyer (museum ship) and those turret guns (if that's the correct term) are no joke. These ships are called "destroyers" for a reason.

Maybe it’s not totally realistic for some, but just take a moment to imagine being there, then take a few more to remember those brave young MEN who’s valour saved us all from what could have been a totally different world. We will never forget you!

Seems unlikely that the U Boat would have tried to engage 2 destroyers on the surface with the intention of winning.
