storyline
Based upon the novel "The Good Shepherd" by C S Forester, this is the thrilling story of the leader of an Allied convoy crossing the North Atlantic in 1942 as he faces relentless attack by a Nazi submarine wolf pack. The leader of the convoy's destroyer screen is a US Navy commander making his first Atlantic crossing. The story focuses on the his command responsibility as he fights the cold, the relentless night, the brutal sea and his deep fatigue as he chases down the attacking submarines in the deadly game of cat and mouse. The exciting story, a thrilling ride-along with the beleaguered captain, so deeply portrays the elements of battle command that for a long period of time the book was used as a text at the US Naval Academy. I appreciate that you can hear that the commanders of Dicky and Harry are just as exhausted as Hanks character. They've been locked at action stations for just as long as Greyhound has, I like that detail.

My uncle was on Royal Navy destroyers in the Mediterranean and said he sometimes used to see the servicemen and ship's crew of the vessels they were escorting applauding them just as you see in this clip. I'm sure, had he lived long enough to see this film, this scene would have had quite an effect on him as it does me.

You see the relief on Hanks face when they pass the men cheering on the ships in the convoy. Up till then, he was tormented by the lives lost during this short period, especially those by his hand (German). It then became real about all the lives he saved when all those men in the convoy came out to cheer.

Even if he couldn't save them all from the Black Pit, the fact that he risked his life for them warrants the respect and cheer these men give him. You can tell he's touched by their gratitude. So many owed their lives to captains like him.

To all my fellow veterans. Never forget the gift it was to serve. The honor it was. Maintain that dignity you so deserve for your time spent in defense of something greater than yourself. So many are grateful for you, myself included.

Still one of the best naval war films of all time. Hanks has been in two of the best ones, Saving Private Ryan on land, and this on the sea...lol. Plus, he's executive producer of two of the best war series of all time with Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Quite a resume.

Without doubt the best wartime Naval movie I've ever seen, historically correct in every sense of the word for that period of time.
Brilliantly Produced, Directed and acted, "Bravo Zulu" to all involved.

I love the British accent of the CIC of the support group on the HMS Diamond.

I've seen this mkovie a few times, but seeing this scene again I cried. Just thinking about what those men and women went through on troop transports and medical transports... I'll forever be grateful for them as I wouldn't be here and would've have had the chance to thank them.

Goddamn I miss the navy. What an outstanding movie this was, really great detail about how the military functions at sea even to this day. 3:48 onward is a real spine-tingler, and Hanks sells it perfectly. It's not just about the lives he's lost and the ones he's taken... it's about the lives he's SAVED.
