I like how this movie is reduced to the basics: to survive until air cover comes and to save as many of the merchant ships as possible.

It would have been awesome in a theater... Even with a 60" screen and sound bar, it wasn't the same as if it was in a movie theater with Dolby... Darn this pandemic

Based on CS Forrester's "The Good Shephard". Forrester (known for "Master and Commander") paid great attention to detail. However, U-boats did not taunt the escorting ships. That would be dangerous and hard.

There were close up surface battles between U-boat and escorts. As detailed in USA Today:

"During one close encounter (seen in the trailer), Greyhound comes within feet of an aggressively attacking U-boat. While played for drama, there were similar instances at sea, such as a point-blank 1942 encounter between a German U-boat and the Canadian destroyer, HMCS Assiniboine. That ended with the U-boat sinking after a furious close-up gun battle.
"

"They were literally blasting each other with pistols, rifles, revolvers, " Laco says. "The cook even came out of the galley and threw an empty case of Coca Cola bottles down the submarine hatch."

One draw back to waiting till night. You don''t have time to charge the batteries and attack the convoy. It was quick. then get out....

The Allies win the battles, but those U-Boats is the toughest opponents they ever faced.

God it must've sucked to be a merchant marine in WW2. Nothing you can do except hope the U boat captains are bad at math and miss.

Ok real talk imagine being on one of those transports or cargo ships, knowing that a Wolfpack is surrounding your convoy and the only hope you have is a handful of destroyers and the hope everyone knows what they’re doing.

With a top speed of 17.7 Knots (32.8kph/20.8mph) while surfaced with an abysmal speed of 7.6 Knots (14.1kph/8.7mph) underwater, U-boats often operated independently because it takes too long for multiple U-boats to converge and intercept a convoy together.

In comparison, a typical freighter will always outrun a U-boat at 24 Knots while the Tribal Class Destroyers are capable of reaching a cruising speed of 36 Knots, more than enough to outpace and destroy U-boats with Depth charges.
