In this video, I give you my 5 top TIPS on how to grow BIG cauliflower heads at home.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) #garden #gardening #cauliflower

Man I love this guy. I actually started own garden and orchard 3 years ago because of him. Help me mentally so much in fact I don’t rely on antidepressants as much for stability. When a tree fail or a crop fail I don’t even get down on myself I just come here for more information. Thank you!

Fun fact cauliflower, Broccoli, all Cabbages of which there are like a million varieties, Bock Choy, Kale, and Brussels sprouts are derived from a wild plant called Brassica oleracea which looks like a garden weed.

I never thought much about cauliflower until this past winter/spring. Grabbed a couple of sixpacks of starts, and was astonished by how large and flavorful they were! The purple ones looked great in the front yard garden, and started a few conversations. Cheers!

An Australian living in Canada now since 1971...your teachings are great, but your Aussie way... it is just beautiful ..even had a fleeting thought maybe I could return one day to live....the words written on your t-shirt seeing the earth through her eyes.... that is so precious and evocative..thank you

Hello Mark . I threw my caulies away this season. They were full of caterpillars. I won the fight (just) against the slugs and snails, but the caterpillar did me in. So thanks for this vid. Much needed for next season.

The purple cauliflowers are huge! I grew them for the first time this season. Even though I did my normal thing of planting them far too close rogether, some of the heads were 30cm in diameter. I’ve never grown them to that size. I will add that we had a very wet winter here in Tassie, which hugely boosted the growth of everything. No fertiliser used, I just grow in compost like Charles Dowding.

Hey mate. Thanks for all your videos and great content! I have been trying to decide whether or not to post this for some time, but decided to in the end as I think it is important to acknowledge those who have helped us.

I started following you because I was browsing some gardening videos and saw you using an ET and knew straight away you must be a veteran. I have never met or seen someone who isn't a vet use an issued ET.

I was med discharged from the army in 2013 following some substantial injuries I got both in training and in Afghanistan, and have struggled with mental health since my deployment in 2012. I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder and PTS in 2015 following a complete marriage breakdown (my fault). Since finding your channel about 1.5 years ago I have been much more active with the veggie garden ( by that point I had basically abandoned it) and it has significantly improved both my mental and physical health. Every time I see one of your videos has been posted it gives me a motivation boost to keep going. There is something so calming and rewarding about focusing on growing food. I am a big advocate for being self sufficient and its even more important in todays world.

I was hesitant to write this message because I don't want to get any of the usual 'thanks for your service' things that people who mention a military background on YouTube usually get. As you know that is not what we served for.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you for being there, somewhat unknowingly, for a broken digger and helping to facilitate a positive and rewarding change in my life.

Keep it up mate!

At 52 yrs old, I'm a city girl who moved to the mountains. New to gardening. It's kind of been my salvation. Never even seen what cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and broccoli look like growing. I've got a bunch growing now and i had no idea what cool, weird, Audrey 2 kind of plants they are! 🤣

Thanks Mark. Since watching your videos I have started to plant crops. I only have 6 garden beds and a old concrete wash tub.
But I have carrots in the tub
Two small beds full of strawberries and the others have cabbage cauliflower broccoli Brussel sprouts snow peas tomato’s and beetroots. Oh and two onions that started sprouting. Hopefully I can get some sort of crop out of them. Keep up the great work. Your a great source of knowledge. Cheers

G'day Mark.
I like to fold the leaves over the head and hold them with clothes pegs to protect the heads from the sun. 👍
Great stuff as always and I thought it was great that you mentioned at the end about leaving the rest in the ground after taking the head. I don't think a lot of people new to gardening know that they can possibly get bonus cauli like that.

All the best.
Daz.
