6010 and 7010 downhill has been the traditional way of welding pipe under API 1104 for many years.
But higher strength pipe is being used now that requires low hydrogen electrodes to be used for root, fill, and cap passes.
7016 is a low hydrogen electrode and is similar to 7018 but has less iron powder which makes it slightly easier for open root welds.
In this video, my friend Andrew Cardin shows his technique and settings for welding an open root using 7016 low hydrogen rod.

“What tie-in?” 🤣 that’s one hell of a welder. Anyone would be more than happy to have him on payroll. Keep burnin-n-earnin! 👊🏻

Hey Jody this takes me back to being a young welder back in the early 70, s, this was a procedure that I cut my teeth on, it was very common in the oil industry when I worked in the rig yards here in Scotland building jackets and deck modules for the North Sea, it was so good to see a young man using the same technique and discipline that I used for about 20+ years! coming now to the end of my career after nearly 50 years welding mainly in the oil, gas and nuclear industries I thought this technique was dead and gone so it was good to see it’s coming back as a “new” procedure!! This is why your channel is easily the best on YouTube you cover everything!

I’m a union boilermaker and we have a test that’s a 7018 all the way open route test on a 2 1/2” 3/8 wall tube. It’s a very hard test but you get the hang of it. You guys have some great techniques that will definitely help me next time I do my test update!

Goes to show, after a lifetime on the pipeline, something to be learned every day even at my age ! Thanks guys . Matt

I did my 6G test with 7018 open root and hated every minute of it, but I passed, I prefer 6010 but understand the need for low/hy roots in certain applications. Good job you guys.

I’ve attempted running a root with 7016 a couple times, amazing how easy he makes it look!

Hi,

Thats the position I usually use when doing repairs on my steel boat, when standing on the ground welding I often use a 6010 root with negative on the stinger, and then the 7018-1 on top with positive electrode. I believe this gives a bit more elastic weld needed . Thanks for your time teaching us to make these experiments .... sometimes we get it right big smile :-)

You may want to try Kobelco LB-52U electrodes for this kind of job. The soviets welded all their pipelines with these.

Very nice tutorial. Goes well with the hydrogen discussion about cellulose rods.

Looking forward to seeing future clips on this process.
We dont use 6010 rods here in South Australia, 7016 is the common rod and is used to test for welders certification on pipe.
I am currently practicing for this test.
Thank you Jody this is very helpful !

I wish I could have seen this video yesterday. I took a open butt 6g with 7016. It passed but this would of helped. 👍🏼keep up the good content.

Filarc 56s root, pretty much the standard 7016 root this side of the pond... Nice to see you guys getting some arc time on a 7016. Nice rod to use for sure.

Two 250mm long piece of 6x60 mm flatstock, 30° bevel 1-1, 2 mm land, 1, 8-2, 2 mm gap, vertical up, root with 2, 5mm 7018-1 preheated DCEP 57-63 amps, and fill/cap with 2, 5/3, 2mm 6013 DCEN 75/85 amps. One coupon out of six, to make right in order to be a welder in Hungary. Sorry fo the nomanonthemoon system.

Love your work Maan, I learn a lot from you.

Great video, Jody. I'm not familiar with 7016 in the least, so I learned something. 👍

Ive used 3/32 9018 H4 DCEN root and switch polarity for fill and cap and 309 L16 DCEP open root fill n cap. Such tricky welds to do!!lol
